Free Medical

Aloha Kakou,So do you need free medical? After discussion with Gerard Akaka the son of the senator and head of the medical personnel at Queens this is how it works. The intent of Queens medical center upon its inception by Queen Emma and Kamehameha the Fourth was to establish a hospital for "the sick and indigent (poor) Hawaiians, and sea men abroad". The Queens medical center is still inline with this intent. I was told that this policy is an internal policy and would not be found in writing. If you are poor and in need of medical service, Hawaiian or haole, Queens will not turn you away regardless of your ability to pay. However if you live in Kahala and drive a Mercedes and claim you cant pay you will have to prove why you cant. Queens has a protocol to determine whether or not you can or cant pay. Through further discussion I found that Queens will also offer you a discounted pay plan if you make a descent living and need discounted service as well. So if you need medical care and you've been holding off and you think you need heart or cancer treatment I would go to Queens they are the specialist in these areas.Gerard did not give many reasons for the unwritten policy of health care but I could suffice to say that having a written policy for free health care for Hawaiians would cause many law suits, like the ones on Kamehameha Schools. Also Federal Funding would more than likely dry up because of equal rights protection 14th amendment, Title XI of the civil rights act and 42 USC § 1981.If anyone should need help with this just post a comment.NA Makou Makemake Aloha,KU

  • Forgive me there is so much of your post that makes me ill. I have taken people there to get services some were helped and some were not. It all depends on what for and if you have legal aid on your side. Queens work with legal aid, they talk. It depends on what services or resources the hospital have, if it's available than itis plausible to receive, if it's not on their resource listing than you don't. It also depends on the person behind the counter too at the time of asking. I believe there is an archives or room that has it written, I wondered in there once when I was very very young by accident and I believe that I read the in house secret document. I say believe because it didn't dawn on me what I was reading until someone was in need of medical treat with no money, and I happen to be there so I walked up to the counter and advocated. I was being a bit assertive and it worked. I have also taken people and dropped them off at the hospital for treatment and they were turned away.

But you did good, because if many of us inquire and tell or talk it works we can get dire need of medical to our people. People are dying before there time and I'm so pissed over this. Of course we too have to be attentive to our health and take responsibility for our own health. Another problem, is drug addicts have manipulated the medical profession that they turn people away just based on that 'cry wolf' assumption. Thanks for sharing your good work. Kaohi
