I walked by the palace this morning, unaware of what I would find once I arrived there...Apparently they're filming the already infamous 'love story' on our palace grounds for 4 days. The palace is decked out in all its regal splendor, including the gazebo. (I hope they're not allowed to enter the gazebo...they won't even let most Hawaiians walk on the gazebo!)They've put mulch down over all the pavement, to make it appear like dirt roads, and they've got horse-drawn carriages (minus the horses) sitting in front of the main entrance's steps. They've also got actors in costume walking around...it all makes for a very surreal scene.While I don't support the movie (based on historical facts? yah, right...), the palace right now really is a sight worth seeing.BTW, if you're thinking about going to the archives, palace grounds parking is off-limits.

As for the script, it is also available for everyone to read here on Maoliworld (look at the right-hand column). I browsed through it the other night, and even sent it to some of my friends to review. As expected, no one is all that happy with it... They really do portray Dole as a Hawaiian sympathizer, as if he was unwillingly dragged along in the plot to overthrow the queen, instead of being one of the leaders. It's sickening. I highly recommend reading the script. We've all heard that it's bad, but you definitely need to find out for yourself.
And I can't believe that the movie crew are solely responsible for handling palace artifacts! That really is hewa! Who's watching them?!? But then again, if this movie writer/producer actually thinks our nation is dead (as stated in the script), then I guess he's not all that worried about caring for our ali'i's property...
Aloha, we were there for a small protest of the film earlier in the week and I also found the events at the palace to be a little surreal. We were standing on the Ewa side of the palace holding some signs and they were TRYING to film a scene for the movie where they had the Navy soilders, in full costumes and with guns, rushing the gate at that end and pointing their guns right to the palace, as we stood not 20 feet away holding our reinstated nation signs. I triiiip...it was weird.
The reinstated nation of Hawaii has had some information out about what is hewa about the script and the uses of the palace. For example, they are also filming in many of the rooms of the palace, and using "replicas" of the most precious of the palaces artifacts and furniture. The movie staff have the sole responsibility of changing the replicas in and out of their areas. They also portray Standford B. Dole as a "savior" and "friend" to the Hawaiian people and there are lines in the script that Indicate Hawaiians wanted the right to vote in the American government....WHOA. messed up. Any way, I just wanted to say I also thought the filming was pretty werid...ALOHA =)
