The 1984 lava flows viewed over the lights of Hilo. The flows advanced to within 4 miles of the townbefore the eruption ended. (Photograph by David Little)According to the USGS, the most recent eruption of Mauna Loa occurred in 1984. This eruption originated at the summit and, within a few hours, migrated to the northeast rift zone. The resulting lava flows advanced to within 4 miles of Hilo before the 3-week-long eruption ended. Similar short-duration eruptions of Mauna Loa's northeast rift zone in 1852 and 1942 produced flows that came within about the same distance of Hilo. In 1855, a much longer-lived eruption fed a flow that stopped half a mile east of the upper Kaumana area on the western outskirts of modern Hilo. Lava invaded the present boundaries of Hilo in 1881, although the flow did not reach the shoreline, where the village of Hilo was located at that time. The 1881 flow underlies much of Kaumana and extends a half mile downslope of Komohana Road. According to The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, as of recent June 26, 2008 and updated bi-weekly…”Mauna Loa is not erupting. Slow extension, as measured by GPS receivers on either side of the volcano, continued.” SEE: http://volcano.wr.usgs.gov/maunaloastatus.phpThis actually means that the volcano is growing which only means it’s a matter of time before she blows. If so, could it flow far worse than what has been recorded?

Hazard zones for lava flows on Mauna Loa. The flowserupted in the last 150 years are shown in gray anddated. The major housing subdivisions are shown ingreen.NOTE: Since our big earthshake of October, 2006, my sources told me of numerous meetings being held by geologists and other consultants flown in by private businesses to investsigate for themselves (not trusting government) the impact of damage Mauna Loa could do. WE ALL MUST REMEMBER THE LEGEND OF HUALALAI MOUNTAIN....How could Hualalai erupt after soo many years? It could happen should Mauna Loa's blast impacts Hualalai and awakens her....THINK ABOUT IT....

  • Oh by the way....it was more than a legend but an old prophesy that in the beginning of the 20th century Hualalai was to begin to stir and then into an awakening because of the disrespect at her feet and on her .....we see it all with new development and bottleneck traffic and continued disrespect of ali'i drive area and the sacredness of the entire area = take a look at Hokulia development for when you start to unearth iwi this starts the land to stir as it has been.....the earthshake of 2006 is part of this prophecy. That the coastline from Puakea Bay in Kohala all the way down to Honaunau and further will drop to the sea. That there will be new coastlines. Waikoloa town will be no more for it will drop into the ocean....just see the land crying....why is that area so dry with it's name being Waikoloa? There is more water under that land mass than you can ever imagine. The problem is the diversion of water with all the development around that area and the coastline of the resorts and new gated communities. Just drive down and look at all the old lava flows of all the mountains and respect the path it has taken as our ancestors have done also. The five mountains here are not just for healing but it protects us too if we don't compromise our cultural values and stand up and fight.
  • In my opinion, there is continued righteousness in aina. People must protect and preserve the aina and stand up for aina not just by protest but by getting in the face of county and state government and sometimes federal government in the court system to fight off what keeps people without hale - development and no real jobs outside of tourism to keep up with economy standards of living.

In Kohala, we as for and nonprofit organizations (there are quite a few here) as well as individuals, family owned businesses, and old and new families, have been doing this here for over 30 years where it is PRIME land for vultures. We don't just protest for we are down there in the trenches knowing the law of today to call politicians and government and yes sometimes private individuals and businesses to their feet. We're not just all waha here and have spent millions in hiring legal representations and professionals to prove our cases on how important aina is to our culture here in Kohala and as natives of aina.

In fact, just the other day I sent a letter to the county planning director who I have known since his inception of his role with Mayor Kim. My letter encouraging him to expire a permit with false intentions - one that initially claims support of our community when it fact we won on a case against the old county government and this same private development in the past. I told him in writing that if he fails our concerns I will take legal action against him - my organization along with 2 other organizations that already have 3 attorneys working for them probono.

In my opinion, aina will not bless our people if we don't stand up for it...who else but Madame Pele is going to stand up for us? By legend and fact of land mass, Pele is not able to travel along our coastline and land mass. In fact, Kohala is considered a zero risk to volcanic activity by homeowners insurance standards statewide and nationally. So without her help, the people must stand no matter what part of the island chain you reside on.

It is sad that it takes time and money to protect aina for if you think about it, it was also time and money which took aina away from us in our governement today. We correct wrongs and point it out in todays government and courts. We appeal if necessary. Hey we took HELCO to federal court when they wanted to build their diesel generators here for what? Development of course - we stopped them to continue have clean air on this side of our island.

People need to take acton and not be depressed about what they see and don't have. Be that mighty warrior we all have in us. Take the anger, for anger by definition means DEEP HURT, and use that energy for the common good of ourselves, our family, our peoples and our aina. Be a voice, take a stand and you will see progress and never give up the spear or weapon of choice. Perserverance is the root to preservation. Preservation of what one does brings strength and in numbers and when you have more strengrh one is able conquor more obstacles to make right the wrong.

There are many wrongs to correct for us here as koko to aina. And it takes the first step, the first stance, the firm voice and stern countenance to pull through and win until the end. We only have the end to meet and we never known sometimes when it ends but we keep pushing forth.

If anything my sister of koko, I hope my words have instilled within you this continued strength as a leader of your own organization in whatever you do. If anything let my words bring you ENCOURAGEMENT for it begins with the the word that stands out....COURAGE for that is what we all need in battle 'til the end. IMUA!

Blessings to you from Kohala in all that you do and undertake....
  • Was it a legend? I agree that the aina is perpetuated in righteousness; however there is no righteousness in our aina when many of our people are without aina and hale...?
  • Mahalo for your comment on my blog.....Yes maybe this is so as "the life of this land IS perpetuated in righteousness". Have you heard of the legend of Hualalai too?
  • Maybe this needs to happen in order for Pele to clean house?
