  • Aloha, e Tina! E hele aku ana ia'u a me ko'u Mama i Loko Pa'akai ma Pepeuali 27th. E noho ana maua ma The Canyons ma Park City. E ho'i ana maua ma Malaki 7th. E makemake ia'u e hele ma papa hula. Pela paha, 'ai kakou i ka 'aina ahiahi papau. By the way, did that last sentence make any sense, because I wasn't sure how to put that together? We are also getting a new puppy ( a yellow lab) from Australia. Any suggestions on names? We are trying to keep it to two syllables or something that we can at least shorten to two syllables. Right now, we are thinking Keau, 'Olena, or Puna, mainly because Harry can actually say them. Let me know if you think of anything. We're trying to be a little unique, but not too far off-the-wall.

    A hui hou,

  • Aloha! Glad to hear all is well over there. I spoke with Cheryl the other week and heard about ho'ike. I hear it was challenging. Our halau just had BIG show, too....and boy am I glad that's over with. I think the show was about 4 hours long. Our keiki will be competing in hula oni e later this month.

I'm still making kapa and have been thinking about kapa in Utah. There are some types of wauke that grow in China and Japan, so you would think that, with water, they would do okay in Utah, too. It's about 2 years from planting to harvest, but Cheryl has a big backyard so..... :) I also talked to Cheryl about printing her kihei/pa'u...we discussed dyes and patterns. Unfortunately, I haven't found many traditional dyes that are color fast. They usuall fade over 6 months or so, faster if direct sunlight gets to them. I have tried soaking in saltwater, covering with natural oils, etc...and the natural dyes still fade with time. Hence, I talked with Cheryl about using paint, so she would not have to redo the pattern twice a year.

I also found an 'olelo Hawai'i class that I like (4 hours on Saturdays). It's really tough to be ANYWHERE on a Saturday morning at 8:30. Anyway, it's with the DOE adult ed guys, so it's free...can't really complain about the price! Right now we're going over the possessives (ko, ka, kana, kona, etc.) and I soooo do not get it. Any tips?

    A hui hou!
  • Hui! I think we could do kapa in Utah if we can find the right trees with decent inner bark. After all, not everyone in the pacific uses wauke. Some areas use ulu and other plants to make kapa. I don't know how that kapa comes out, but it must be okay because people make it. Anyway, just a thought for you guys.

Tell me how the fishing tournament turns out!

    Aloha,

  • Aloha, e Tina! Pehea 'oe? I got your e-mail about the upcoming activities with the hui. I'm so jealous I'm not there to enjoy it with you all. Hopefully, I'll get up there this winter for some snowboarding. I'm just way busy working right now. In between work, I've been surfing, dancing hula, and pounding kapa. Maybe I'll send you some pics of my latest kapa creation. Anyway, have a great time at the fishing tournament and the 'ohana day.

    Aloha,
    Lehua

  • Yes, I knew Nu'uanu is performing. I found out in 'oli class. He took third place. Heidi, a 14-year-old from my halau took 1st place. She was the youngest ever competitor and hence, was the youngest competitor who has won the 'oli competition. Kumu Sonny is very proud! We also won 2nd place wahine kahiko, 1st place wahine 'auana, 1st place kane kahiko, 1st place kupuna kahiko, and 1st place combined kane and wahine 'auana and kahiko.
  • Is Living Traditions already done for this year? I can never remember when it is.

Kalei is way cute. She's starting to look a lot like Pume!
