Aloha everybody! I was born in Philadelphia, descendant to the Maui family.  I cannot get past my great grandfather, when doing genealogy, maybe someone with experience can help me gain an understanding. Here's all that I know about my family:

Kahala Azuma Maui (me)

born from Diane Maui

siblings: Jacqueline Maui, Thomas Maui

born from  Marian Maui

siblings:  Dorothy Maui, Lilian Maui, Eugene Maui and Henry Maui

born from  Eugene Maui

known siblings: Henry and 3 other brothers

This is the extent of my knowledge, except for the fact that my knowledge stops about when my ancestors migrated to New Jersey, possibly running from the law, about 1900 or so.  All of my uncles have died in the American Navy before I was born, and the women with knowledge have passed away when I was very young, leaving us nothing but a few pictures to figure anything out. Where do I start?

  • Nalepo (k) - Kahonuahine (w) [she was a companion and lady-in-waiting for Nahi'ena'ena]; they had six children. The fourth child was Kaono Nalepo (w) - Maui (k) and had two children: Kaluhi Maui (w) married Kaina (k) with no known issue; and Mahoe Maui (k) who didn't marry and no known issue. This is from one of my genealogies from West Maui and that is all I know. You might go to archives or Dept of Health to search the names and see if there are certificates that names the parents of Maui (K); then go from there.

  • I am not sure that this will assist you, however, go to www.ulukau.org and display waihona and double click on Mo'oku'auhau and type the name Maui then serach. There are a lot of persons with the last name of Maui. Most were born on the Big Island, some on Kauai and others in Maui. This is a good place to start looking for marriages. Secondly you can contact the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City Utah. I am a volunteer there and have done extensive research on the Ali'i line of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Maui is an Ali'i name and carries a great genealogy. Aloha Keola
  • Mahalo for your advice, Flo!! Although I've heard many rumors when the elders were alive, I believe the story that says that the original name was changed while someone was running from the law. Its the only story that makes sense to me! My grandmother's sisters went to our motherland in 1988, searching for answers and came up dry. But they didn't have the resources then, that we now have. Thanks for you're well wishes and I will keep you posted!! Aloha
  • You start with u and go backwards..which u already started..get your documents, of your Maui family, births, marriages, deaths..take the ancestor info, like the names, race, and where they come from...the men folk in your family are a sure thing in getting info from their military records. It is interesting that your family name is Maui as it is rare for a family name, but with great honor. Let me know how you doing from time to time..malama pono...Flo
