What's missing from Hawaiian protests?

Americans took away our land…

Americans changed our prayers…

Americans are destroying our culture…

Americans teaching our children lies…

Americans changing our sacred landscape…

But they cannot force us to smile at their deeds.

Aloha mai kākou!

I have been involved in discussions with haoles and foreigners about the events organized by our kanaka brothers and sisters. I know what the goal is, but I wondered if non-Hawaiians know it too, and how they perceive our actions. I am going to share it with you, but not as a criticism, rather as a suggestion. So, please don't be offended, because regardless how offended you are, I cannot change the general perception alone. It is only us together who can change it.

Let's start with the perception, which is of course not absolute, but prevailing. Most Americans view our events and protests, especially the ones that are the reenactment of historical events of excercising our rights PROVIDED BY THEM to express our sentiments and sorrows for the turn of the events. At the same time we are presuming that they are educated and/or interested enough to understand the deep meanings of these historical events. Unfortunately it is not so. Not surprisingly I found more non-Americans (foreigners) who knew more about the history of Hawaii thatn Americans. The conclusion is that regardless our continuous efforts not enough people understand our message. There is one element missing in most of the direct actions. It is the direct and prevailing expression of our anger for and demand of ENDING THE U.S. OCCUPATION. Yes, someitmes there are signs relating to this issue, but the do not prevail. It is our duty and obligation to stress this MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE each and every time. We must express our anger and voice our demands. Let the oppressors feel uncomfortable. This is a direct message and cannot be misinterpreted. Please use it in abundance. The words above were uttered at a public meeting by one of our kanaka sisters.  It tells you all.

What Kū ʻē stands for?

Kū ʻē does not suggest hate or violence. It is the most common Hawaiian way to express opposition and disagreement.  It has been frequently used by Hawaiians to express their disagreement with the illegal occupation of Hawaiʻi by foreign powers.  Even according to the laws of the foreigners you can freely express your opinion.

There are some Americans who try to misinterpret it. But we cannot and will not please everybody. We had an incident here on Kauaʻi:

In the parking lot of a shopping center one of our kanaka brothers was walking towards the store wearing a Kū ʻē t-shirt.

A foreigner (American) approached him and said: “If you don’t like America, why don’t you leave this country?” The kanaka brother turned around and calmly said: “Sir! I have a better suggestion: Perhaps the Americans should leave Hawaiʻi”. He got the ovation from a truckload of kanaka boys who witnessed the incident.  And the man walked away. He could not argue with this statement. Hawaiʻi is not America and it never will be!

Overall, we get plenty of compliments for our courage wearing these T-shirts on the streets and at public meetings. Showing that you are kanaka, is pono, but displaying your love to your ʻāina means that you are Hawaiʻi nei.

  • How heartless,

I was with pono last night and I showed him this site. Not to complain because I do my own battles. Just to connect T=shirts, mainland, and genocide to the intended target which is the first people and their language (Niihau). And where too the Hitler projections had come from that served the psycho sickness that exist on Maoliworld and on ancient grave yards.

Do some research on Mornah Simeona as to what happen in Germany before you talk!

Seriously Samu, I'm always open to honesty and coming out in the open with no behind the scenes. We may disagree on text as far as your sly projection on to the parking lot of "truckload of kanaka boys," therefore, I reserve the right to also question your intent. Not all things are perfect, huh?
    • o LuLu BELL,
There you go again with your Double Personality of "Sweet Sour" Love!
Maybe you should take that trip to Mars. A One Way trip to Mars. I'm sure that Mars is DUI FREE. Until you get there, that is.
Many of our people who are not of the Blood Quantum Mind Set that you are know very well the history of Germany and the world. As they are people who live a Life of Freedom. Which you will never come to know or understand. Sad, but that seems to be the Life that you will always remain to live in. One of an American Slave of the Blood Quantum.

  • Stay cognizant on the illegal occupation stop the nuclear ocean waste dumping!
    • Aloha kākou e Kaohi a e Pomai,

Thank you for your comments. As to me being the part of the problem, I resent it. I always thought that I was part of the solution. Perhaps you don't know me well enough.

I also have to disagree with the statement that Kauaians are the problem. There are many good and progressively thinking rebellious Kauaians. I think it is hewa to generalize and designate residents of one mokupuni as "problem Hawaiians". I urge unity instead of blaming one another, the latter being a very haole tradition.

Nuclear waste dumping is a huge problem, but not bigger than the U.S. occupation. Once we get rid of the occupiers, we may prevent nuclear waste dumping easier. The topic is very important and I suggest you start a discussion on nuclear waste dumping with specific and parctical ideas as to how to prevent it. I will then join the discussion.

As to the Blood Quantum I think I had stated my opinion clearly in my earlier comment to Pomai (see below) and also on the local television Ho`ike in my presentation that ran for a week and was titled: "Hitler and the Hawaiian Blood".

      Me ke aloha

and here is the message about American Blood Quantum:

      Aloha kāua e Pomai,
The essence of what you are saying is true; however, I would rather classify those Hawaiians who support the American system as misguided people rather than enemy. Why? Because we, who see clearly, still have a chance to educate them with collective efforts and make them change their views, while we have no chance to educate those who devised the blood quantum law and imposed it onto the Indian and Hawaiian nations. I personally rather lead a fight against those with inferior intentions towards our lāhue than against the misguided and uninformed kānaka. Once we get rid of the occupiers we can easily discard their laws, while if we get rid of kānaka, who one day might become our supporter, we would be reducing the number of our warriors. We need to follow a smart strategy: on one front fight the occupiers with their own laws and reveal their hypocrisy to the world, and on the other front deal with the misguided or uninformed Hawaiians using our manao.
Many Hawaiian people today would like to see the emphasis on blood quantum fall by the wayside. Blood quantum is a sterile, inhuman way of calculating authenticity. When you ask a person how much Hawaiian blood they have, you expect an answer. If they answer your question with a small percentage or if they refuse to answer, you immediately question their authenticity as a Hawaiian. Never mind -- that blood quantum is completely irrelevant to Hawaiian culture. Throughout history the Hawaiian people have believed that if you're Hawaiian, you're Hawaiian. If you're not, you're not. Percentage doesn't matter. In addition, many people now make a distinction between quantum Hawaiians and cultural Hawaiians. How Hawaiian you are is more determined by how you live, how active you are in the tribe, how you grew up, and what you know of Hawaiian history, culture, and language.

Blood quantum, while it appears harmless, has had a very negative effect on the Hawaiian and also on Indian nations. In many cases the issue of quantum has divided full-bloods and mixed-bloods, causing resentment. The issue also divides Hawaiian community members and non-members on the issue of proof. From a historical and cultural perspective, the idea of blood quantum is dangerous.

Blood quantum is a scientific, government-approved method of determining blood purity and race purity. One of the most frightening examples of a government's interest in blood purity comes as recently as the 20th century in Nazi Germany, when Hitler wanted to create an Aryan master race. The consequence was that millions of people were killed because they were not Aryan. While Nazi Germany is an extreme example, blood quantum is nonetheless a clinical, inhuman, and careless way to determine the ethnic authenticity of a person. We are not Gregor Mendel's cross-pollinated pea plants; we are people. Our ethnicity and cultural identity are tied to our family history, our surroundings, our own hopes and expectations, and our self-identity. To measure our "Hawaiianness" by a percentage is to completely eliminate the human element. And to allow others to judge us based on a number is to continue a harmful trend. It is also a genocidal attempt by the devisers to reduce the number of Hawaiians and Indians, because of expected mixed progression through generation. If you barely made the quantum and your son and daughters has descendents out of his/her bloodline, the offspring will not make the quantum required and will not be eligible for the so called benefits for blood quantum Hawaiians. And when you and your spouse pass away, there might be less Hawaiians to claim or use those benefits created by the US Government to appease somewhat the Hawaiians. This would not happen of course, if blood quantum Hawaiians would marry only blood quantum Hawaiians, but this exclusivity would be contradictory to the Hawaiian traditions, where Hawaiians marrying non-Hawaiians was practiced and not condemned, BECAUSE IT WAS NOT THE BLOOD QUANTUM THAT DETERMINED IF YOU WERE HAWAI`I NEI OR NOT.

Launch a quiet protest against the reliance on blood quantum to measure Hawaiian authenticity. The next time someone asks you what percentage Hawaiian you are tell them that they are asking a rude question and don't answer -- because the answer doesn't matter. Either you are Hawaiian or you're not.
We must work together, because ʻaʻohe puʻu kiʻeki e ke hoʻāʻo ʻia e piʻi.

      Me ke aloha pumehana.

      • Janos keoni Samu,

Okay, I can conceed to the understanding of what you wrote. Now tell me what do I do with the dead bodies?

Since you have contributed to the genocide and use all the lala of the lala again what do I do with the dead bodies?

I know Mornah Simeona tried to 'oki' the souls from a hole filled with Jews and died after, but that has yet to happen to DHHL. So, since I am unable to crunch down on the lala and have one face the reality of the bloodquantum, my question is what do I do with the dead bodies?

It is so fascinating that Richard repeats your every word because he is too stupid to think of any for himself.

But, you on the other hand have 'lala' and lala' on top of lala.

What do I do with lala and the nuclear waste in Waianae that is about to or have contaminated my community?

I cannot use lala, but if you speak the truth about the bloodquantum or even speak to the bloodquantum instead of lala around it I can understand your 'white' need for nuclear waste in your back yard. If one has lots of investing intent into energy, I have no problem. This is not fishing, I have the investors writing to me all the time using word verbatim that one is speaking and printing on Maoliworld. I will try and cut and pace to this site. I erased it this morning.

However, if the bloodquantum stay's in place the investors will go elsewhere-thus stopping the bank loans in Hawaii from Asia.

You lack the smarts to further your investments scheme on Maoliworld. T-shirts seems good for now but your business should florish on other products and slogans.

A bed of black roses seems fashionable at this time. Halloween and the dead seems appropriate for a product of black roses, I believe one can purchase black roses from WalMart.
        • A Bed of Black Roses is your Dream for the future, O LuLu BELL. Just keep on spilling out your Hate and Lies..... o Pomai
          • Mahalo ia `oe e Pomai!
