This group deals with the problems we face, the rights of the incarcerated, especially those sent out of the country to the WASP racist continent of the U.S.A. How do we help our people already in prison and bring them back home. How do we prevent many from being imprisoned and how to cope with the various issues. Give us your mana'o and problem-solving suggestions. Be active as it is our kuleana in all facets of our society.

  • A week ago at my mother's hale our neighbor boy "X" came by the house, mom had a pa'ina for my uncle Richard Naihe's passing and his funeral to follow days later in Hilo. "X" was always welcomed by my father before his passing and we welcome him home all the time. Came from a divroced household, oldest son, open heart of aloha and in trouble not finding direction. He told mom he was home from prison from the mainland...they made sure he didn't drink to get drunk and saw he got home as he told mom what happened to have him in prison again.

I ran into him at our local store and welcomed him as I told him I heard he was home. He was a little down, just came out of the hospital on a hit and run, he assumed who the person was and wasn't sure. I confirmed with him his thoughts may be right because this same person did a hit & run this last summer and my family was witness to it. He was shocked hearing what I told him because also the suspect was his 1st cousin in a truck belonging to her abusive boyfriend - they were in an argument on back dirt road to the beach when they hit him head on and had his dirtbike slam into the the barbed wired fence unable to pry it off by hands. This boy, always having hard luck but he is soo much aloha...when you look into his eyes you see he is searching for true friends and family. He knows we are there for him as much as we can at least to make him feel at home when he is home from prison in the mainland.

He was put in prison because his last girlfriend confessed to stealing credit cards and because she used a stolen card to put gas in his truck when she borrowed it from him one day, he was accused of the same especially with his background. I gave my advise of stop dating girls with issues and young and find himself first, work on himself first and then find a good strong and right head on her shoulders in support of what he wants to overcome. Told him where not to hang out and if anything ask chicks for their ID before taking them out...we laughed about it but so true.

So in his case, what to do when your marked (his words). What kind of legal defense should be given to those who come out of prison find themselves in trouble with the law for stupid charges like that? Meaning he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and with the wrong person to think his word that he didn't have anything to do with it while on probation?

I feel that our probation office system should have a support group funded as well by the prison system for transitional housing if needed and full service employment placement. I believe a felon can't apply for food stamps under being "marked". If we have a system in place for those out of prison to keep care until they are fully working yet have
immediate services to support groups for transition whether religious or not it will help to stay on path for a good change.
With our economy being very bad in Hawaii and jobs already scarced for those who don't have a criminal background, it's a challenge to come back home and maybe best if they stay on the mainland...then maybe not if their family support is at home.

There needs to be lobbyist out there to create a plan that could be workable. There are federal lands available and not near any community and maybe a choice for the state to use the land to build prison facilitites and have a double funding this way. The only obstacle would be if the community does not want it near them....but if we look hard there are federal lands way up in mountains away from community that can be utilized and maybe one solution. But we're a society of fear these days, community might just say no thinking it's still in their backyard.

This is a hard issue to work at but there must be some good problem solve.
