keali'i, i waiting for that day when i am asked to stand and claim my royal ali'i bloodline of the village of Moku'ula, Lahaina the first original capital of this kingsdom of hawaii nei, being raised there was very sacred to our ohana and yes to my mama Kahili Kaina Momona and my grandma Lydia Poaipuni. i have just located 3 more ahupua'a-s to my ohana's on maui nui......there is alot of us with ali'i bloodline to our sacred lands of our kupuna kahiko's......thats why our mo'okuauhau is very important to us that distingush between Ali'i and Makaainana (commonor)........no need be one ali'i to have power trip, attitude of hewa (wrong) will divide us......Respect is needed by all people and that is what is missing in our generation of mixed cultures on our lands filled of intruders.
i am finding that now i have to go to court and battle for these lands that was illegally stolen from my ancestors....
i look forward for that day when our lands is returned legally to the rightful Heirs of the Kingdom of Hawaii Nei......da princess
The First capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom was in Kailua-Kona where the King Kamehameha Hotel on the Beach stands. Upon his death, his son moved the capital to Lahaina primarily because of the whalers and that being the center of commerce within the fledling Kingdom. My g-g-g-grandmother was Kahonuahine who married Nalepo of Olowalu; she was companion and lady in waiting for Nahi'ena'ena at Moku'ula. Her daughter Kaaaka married Moses Nahina whose parents were Nahina and Kaleionehu; her parents were Kamakau (w) and Kamakauilani (k) of Napili/Kaanapali. This is one side of my mom's lineage. Who knows, we might be related. LOL...
Kauikeaouli then moved the capital to Honolulu because once again the ships were gathering there and commerce was vibrant and active because of the natural harbor and he wanted to be near the center of all the activity. That's the onlyreason the capital shifted from Lahaina to Honolulu.
My great-grandmother, Kameha'iku Nahina and her two brothers moved to Kaua'i, married and raised their family there. She married Mihilani Pu'ulei from Ha'ena and her brotherr married Hannah Nu'uhiwa and lived in the same area. Mihilani's wife Kalaukehau is from the Kaianui family and her fatther is a Kauka who came from Puna, Hawai'i whose parents were Keawe and Laihi (w).
Typically, Hawaiians had freedom of movement and many did just that. The same for ali'i who travelled and married into the various lines. Kahahana's daughter Laielohelohe of Oahu married Piilani of Maui and Kahekili had conquered Oahu and eventually lost it. Throughout history these changeovers occurred. Lonoikamakahiki also did similar conquest from Hawaii to mai, to Oahu; then rtired on Kaua'i.
So, we malama all the ali'i from all the islands because most were related to each other. Kaumuali'i became husband of Ka'ahumanu and is buried in Lahaina, Maui. Each island has a special place for the ali'i and are a reminder of a time in our illustrious history.
Many blessings to you da princess and mahalo for all you also do.
being raised on the village of moku'ula, alot of people came to visit the royal tomb that my mama, Kahiki Kaina Momona, cared take and honored to the day she died, tane mahalo for your information of the past history however, i live the history that i breathe on the 'aina of my kupuna kahiko's, i learned living on the lands of my ancestors, i neva have to read from a book the native kanaka maoli way of life or have historians tell me of the way of my ancestors or how they were, i personally lived it, breathe it, heard it, seen the visions of it and till todayI also HONOR it in my generation and i have passed the baton to the next generation in my lifetime.....i have never met you, having your history on the kingdom of maui nui, never ever...however i feel a deep connection to you Tane, and i honor that in respect of my tutu wahine's and tutu kane's of this Kingdom of Maui Nui.......many more Blessings to you and your ohanas, for one day our ohanas will meet in Ke Akua's time........mahalo Ke Akua..........mauruuru.............da princess
Aunty Rachel (Lahela Ialaole) is my grandfather's cousin; Kapeka is my mother's cousin and Francis is my Dad's cousin; thus Aunty Lahela' mo'opuna are my double-barrel cousins. LOL...
Many have a misconception of the Kingdom laws and constitution or are ignorant of what it says. because of that, much is conjectured and reinterpreted till many get confused. The constitution lays out the eligibility , criteria, and process in electing a new monarch should the previous one fails to name a successor.
Today it's a catch-22 but still can be worked out lawfully since the Hawaiian Kingdom still exists albeit under the U.S. Belligerent Occupation. Kauikeaouli established the Royal School for his hand-picked ali'i children to be eligibles for successor-ship of the throne should there be a vacancy whereby the previous monarch fails to name one.
There is a process that covers this should it occur. The monarch, Legislature (House of Commons), and the House of Nobles all play a crucial part in this process. The candidates must be above reproach, educated properly, not an idiot, and approved as part of the criteria.
Lot named Pauahi and she rightfully declined; that left the Queen Dowager Emma who deferred it to Lunalilo whose rank was higher than hers and being a bloodline of Kamehameha. Thus he was the first elected monarch and popular with the people.
When Liliuokalani died, there were two women from the Royal School that survived the queen; Abigail Maheha and Jane Loeau. Coincidently, they were the only ones that had legitimate descendants that survive today. Kuhio tried to declare the Queen incompetent which created a rift between them and she cut him out of her will. He became persona non grata. Which amounted to him being cut out of the line of succession. The Crown Princess was patented and approved as heir to the throne due to the fact that she was directly blood-related ; unfortunately, the Queen out-lived her which ended the Kalakaua Stirps.
Since the unlawful belligerent occupation of the U.S.A., the still-existing Hawaiian Kingdom has been powerless to act on its own behalf and due process of choosing a monarch. Precedent demands that today, should the subjects of the kingdom choose to continue the constitutional monarchy, that this would then open up to all collateral relations of the children that were picked for the Royal School; which includes the direct descendants from Jane Loeau and Abigail Maheha provided all meet the requirements established in the Constitution.
We must remember there were senior lines and junior lines. Also important in the Hawaiian system was who's the mother and who's the father whereby the birthright and birth rank are established. With all the intermarriages today, it could be a problem for many. If that practice is dispensed with; then it would open up to many more. Catch-22 is that the monarch has to approve of the marriages or that person would be struck from the line of succession as if dead. So, we can see updates and changes must be ratified by legislature and House of Nobles before electing a monarch or reformation of government. This tells me we are putting the cart before the horse and needlessly worrying about who will be mo'i.
The other point brought up was identifying who is ali'i. Many of us were raised not to profess that we were ali'i and that people will know by one's demeanor, conduct, and even to the extreme of name recognition. In other words you'll be judged by your actions. To boast you are ali'i or descendant from one; is to be ho'okano, arrogant, and presumptuous as well as vain. When the missionaries came to Hawai'i, many ka po'e haole Melika wanted to kill off the ali'i so they could control the people and takeover Hawai'i. Poison was the most prevalent usage during that time; and the reason many went underground. This produced the behaviour I previously described.
The ali'i of olden days were related to many throughout the islands. Many bloodlines intermeshed with others and there are descendants from pio unions on all islands. It becomes irrelevant what island since most were related to each other.
Each island has their sacred places which should be revered and preserved. Hawai'i ka pae aina has been recognized internationally as the Kingdom of Hawaii and to splinter it up more would be a treasonous action. Governorship was given to each island and this is where your ali'i from your island could hold title. Molokai and Lana'i was always part of Mau'i's jurisdiction. If you view hawaiiankingdom.org you may better understand the construct of the Kingdom and its laws which are still in effect.
There is strength in our unity when compared to other world nations. We should look to the 21st century and adjust to today's dynamics and choose as subjects of the kingdom which was evolving, modern, and progressive. Before the U.S. intervention, Hawaii was one of the richest country in the world. Today it's what we make it.
Instead of living under the racist U.S. WASP society, we can live under the Hawaiian Polynesian society and still relate to the outside world and actively participate with them once again.
aloha tane, i like the double barrel cousins~~~i have a lot of cousins and yes most of them are double barrels, you always speak with wisdom, i would love to one day meet you and your ohanas. I give my greatest AlOHA's to you and yours, what a genuine person to have in your ohanas....many more blessings and mahalo nui for your vast knowledge that you share so freely to EDUCATE us the next generation of speakers of truth......mauruuru....da princess~~~
aloha---i myself faced the disrespect of others expressing their thoughts in language that should not be allowable on this forum, some turned it into a daily journal and others used it to vent. this is a forum and people lose the intent of this forum to educate. i have not been on this forum for awhile because of the disgrace of communication, and when one kupuna voice his/her opinion in a foul hatred mouth, it makes me wonder???, the moderator should get involved and follow the policies to monitor this site, so all can have a fair share of educating each other, not to hewa each other. Mahalo Ke Akua for his Wisdom to teach not to take down like the a'ama crab syndrome......mauruuru~~~da princess
mahalo for all of the wisdom. There is truth to what all of you have posted. Mahalo nui, and I will keep everyones wise council.
It is true. We do need to all think about being all together in this.
As for me, I am active in this on Kauai for those that know me, I am very engaged in all of this and certainly dont sit on my a## thats for sure. *well except when I am sick*. I have been an activist for well over 20 years.
Becasue I never leave Kauai, I only know what I am taught here, and how people feel here. Our feelings are genuine. Thats why the internet has been so good for me. SO I can see what the rest of the world is doing.
I only want what is best for my keiki. As for Oahu, our immediate ohana is from Waianae, Hawaiian Homelands as well. Waiwaiole side. We do have Ohana there. But here on Kauai, we operate on the beleif of the "Great Wailua", which we are activly trying to protect and preserve as the birthplace of Moi. As for Brecia, myself, my ohana and many other great herioc HAwaiian patriots have been involved in that struggle. None of us on Kauai sit back and do nothing. We are very active to get out and fight for the aina and the ohana. For us, the SF was about what was hewa to us. People have been coming over here, scraping our opihi, grabbing all of our limu and destroying the keiki of our sacred maile lauliilii, taking all of our i'a, and taking all of our meat from the kuahiwi. THis is what we saw would happen. Taking over what little camping we had left. Bringing all of the homeless here. These were our val;id concerns.
We feel that Oahu disrespects Kauai. Here at Maoliworld that debate must be heard. THe rest of the po'e should understand how outer islands people feel.. This wasnt tourists doing this. This was other local people and other Hawaiians. That made us very angry. As a cultural practitioner, and a gatherer, I can tell you that almost everyone on Kauai is very upset at the way people come over here, disrespect our aina, and scrape everything from us. SO, u know, we have every right to that feeling.
Thats why for me, sometimes, well most of the time, As the Kingdom comes back, I would like to see Kauai go back to its own alii and have autonomy from Oahu. I think lots of poeple on Kauai would like to see that. That really has got to be part of this debate. Sometimes, lately I really do not care sometimes who will be the ALii Moi o ka Pae Aina. I just want Kauais alii back, and autonomy. I think that Moloka'i and Lana'i feel the same way. Then, when there is the reason for all the Moi to get together fine, everyone go to Oahu and conduct the business of the Country. But why cant we just have the rule of our own islands? That really is my bottom line, I am beginning to feel lately. SO the debate over Kawananakoa vs Kamehameha line is perhaps moving to the background in favor of this larger debate. I dont know how Maui poeple feel about this. WHy not return to the Moi lines from Piilani? What would be so bad about that? Kauai wants its independence.
I was always taught the chants, moolelos, and geneology was extremely important. SO thats how it is with me.
I loved so many of the comments. I liked that if you ask whos an alii everyone raises there hands. No one wants to be makaainana. Boy I have said this so many times!! I have also said the same thing, hey if u are alii what are u doing except running around and claiming it!! Exactly!!
As for bowi9ng to others greater knowlege, ae, I agree to that, But I still say gotta respect both ways even if u hate them, or dont agree. THey are still alii, even when they do bad things.
Kinda like what we always joke about our kupuna, you know? Hey auntie and uncle may do insane nutty things, but we gotta let em go, cuz they are kupuna and they are NEVER wrong no matter what. Not all alii are good, or good leaders, or pololei.
Guess thats what i am the most worried about. We get this all organizwd and settled, I just want to make sure we have the best leaders we can get. For my keikis sake.
SO, my puuwai is in the right place. But hey I got some things to share mana'o too. I did go and check out some other stuff about the whole situation, it was interesting and something to contemplate. We have our own groups on Kauai claiming different things, and many of us are struggling over wether to support them or not.
So I am glad to share the mana'o and ike, and mahalo for sharing yours.
Kaohi!! were u there!! oh nui kealoha!!......yes I remember that. A profound experience I will never ever forget.!!!!!
ANd a note to everyone...
I am not makau'u. Let whomever thinks they can stand that wind and rain step foreward. Right, Kaohi? U were there. U know. (lol)
The geneologies I have are just my last 10 years of working to establish who is still having living lines from the Pio lines of Kauaimanokalanipo, and the 24 Pio lines of Kamawailualanimoku.. They arent mine. But I have done a LOT of hana to make sure that every single one is at least pololei, and historicly accurate. I beleive that the Ali'i lines are all still alive, and some ali'i lines are not. So, I started this geneology to prove who has living lines and strong claims, and who does not.
SO if anyone wants to know about Kauai inoa, let me know. Maybe I can kokua.
Another reason why I did these geneologies, is to stop people from making false claims, claiming either Kauai lines, or that they are ali'i when they aren't. I just think that the right people should be proclaimed as ali'i, and the wrong ones should not be. If everyone is silent, and keeps the geneologies to themselves, then all of the posers will get into power, and everything will be way worse then it is now.
Cracks? bring it on. I am not makau'u.
Mahalo to u guys for all of the support.
Ya this should be a pretty interesting place.
Mahalo, I will remember that day, and stay ikaika, koa, and imua eo!!
