EXCERPTS FROM Toni W:

Great news!  State Legacy Land Preservation Commission voted unanimously to put two more lots of Kaiholena at the top of its 2010 priority list and fully fund the $1,650,000 asked for by the Hawaii County to purchase those lots.  The county has already purchased 3 lots of the 6 at Kaiholena and committed the County's 2% Land Fund. The same 6 local Kohala groups that helped shepard this action will be helping the County to line up matching state funds for it next year.  The Legacy Land commissioners all complemented the Kohala groups and community for undertaking the preservation of this important historical coastal property.

NOTE:  In the early 1970's proposal of a resort to the Kaiholena area initially brought the Kohala Comunity to rally against it.  And back then, representatives of the Bishop Museum also walked & noted how much of a historic corridor this area holds.  Direct Lineal descendant(s) to the area also assisted in the preservation.

KAUHOLA, NORTH KOHALA

The Commission ranked the Kauhola Point purchase of the Davis land as number 3 on the list and voted to recommend fully funding the $975,000 requested by Trust for Public Land to complete the purchase from the Davis family to be conveyed to Maika'i Kamakani 'O Kohala. They acknowledged that this would be a first attempt at local control of coastal land with a high recreational usage by a community group rather than a government agency.

Only three projects statewide were fully funded.  The #2 priority is Hawea Heiau Complex and wetlands at Hawaii Kai on Oahu.  The commission also recommended partial funding of the Turtle Bay Ag. Land project on Oahu.

The Commission's recommendations still must be reviewed and adopted by the Land Board in January and signed by the governor. Monies available in the Land Legacy Fund for disbursal in 2011.

Thanks go out to everyone who helped out in preserving these lands. We are not finished with the process, but this was a giant hurdle.

NOTE:  Maika'i Kamakani 'O Kohala is my nonprofit. Our character of our organization is to protect and preserve traditions and customs for our Hawaiian citizen community.  Our purposes for which we are organized is to provide for the education of Hawaiian citizens and those of Hawaiian ancestry; to preserve and cherish all sources and records of anicient Hawaiian customs, language, and historic sites and to engage in economic development programs that benefits the social health and moral welfare of community.

  • Mahalo Nui for the posting of the Great Victory, o Pomai
  • I found out from a colleague that Kauai County has a .5% Land Fund - they need to increase it to 2% so that they can do what we do in preserving land as we do here in Kohala. One must remember that when State Legacy Preservation Land Fund is utilitized in a sale for property with county government, the county has to preserve it for the community as applied for in the application process. All Counties and grassroots organizations should hui and do what we do so that our people can still gather resources of food and practice our cultural rights - to include recreational activities for our families/communities.
