R.L. Stevenson's Poem on Princess Kauilani

Forth from her land to mine she goes, The Island maid, the Island rose, Light of heart and bright of face, The daughter of a double race. Her Islands here in southern sun Shall mourn their Kaiulani gone. And I, in her dear banyan's shade, Look vainly for the little maid. But our Scots Islands far away Shall glitter with unwonted day, And cast for once their tempest by To smile in Kaiulani's eye.

  • Hi, I was going through my old books and found a red leather bound copy of R.L Stevensons 'PRAYERS WRITTEN AT VAILIMA' printed by T.A. Constable, Printer to His Majesty at the Edinburgh University Press. With an introduction by Mrs. Stevenson and published in London by Chatto & Windus, MDCCCX. There is an inscription in the fron by my grandmother to my greatgrand mother in 1912. Would you know anything about the background of this book and or it's value.
    Thanks April
  • I am interested in the finding out who Virginia Kapo'oloku Po'omaikelani married and who her descendants are. I would also like to know if any descendants are buried in Kawaiaha'o Church Cemetery.

  • wow, you did more heavy and deep into the research of R.L. Stevenson. The Conspiracy is still going on and on. Most of our people do not know and realize what really belongs to them. I know that Princess Kaiulani had Whte Peacocks. On my Float I had the two White Peacocks made from the pedles of the Signapore Plumerias. I believe that we are going thru the same conspiracy dealing with the rights of our people today. Long Live The Hawaiian Kingdom, o Pomai
    • Aloha mai,
      Amelia,
My great-grandmother was the daughter of Rose Cleghorn, a daughter of Archiebold and Lapeka. Cleghorn had three daughters with Lapeka before he married Likelike. Rose went on to marry a Robertson and had my great-grandmother Mabel. She was the one who married into the Lucas family, George Lucas to be exact. Together they had my grandfather William. I never knew my great-grandfather George. He left Mabel and their 5 children, and moved to the San Francisco area when my grandfather was a young boy. Mabel told stories about visiting Kaiulani at Ainahau with her mother Rosie and how kind and generous Kaiulani was to her half-sisters and their children. Mabel was 16 when Kaiulani died. Don't have much information about Lapeka. I think she went on to marry several times. Don't even have a surname to track her down.

I can relate to Kailulani, being of mixed ancestry as her, but in our hearts nothing but aloha and loyalty to the lahui. Her life is a sad story of an unfulfilled legacy, one of fierce loyalty to the Lahui, and of dying too young, like many of the alii before her. Did the fake annexation hasten her departure, dying from a broken heart or a lack of will to live? Possibly.
      • ALOHA Kaua, e Miliaulani, Years ago a Hawaiian told me that Princess Kaiulani passed on due to a Broken Heart relating to the ovverthrow. After reading more on the life of Princess Kaiulani and understanding more of the life that she was born into and her role as an Alii, I now understand how she passed of a Broken Heart due to the all that surrounded the overthrow. Just as I and many Kanaka Maoli Hawaii today feel the effects of the overthrow, fake as it was and is. This is one of the reasons why in 1993 I renounced my citizenship to the USA and went home to my country, the Hawaiian Kingdom. Long Live The Hawaiian Kingdom, o Richard Pomaikaiokalani Kinney.
  • In the 1980's I designed and built a float in the King Kamehameha Parade for Papakolea Community on Princess Kaiulani, R.L. Stevenson and two of her White Peacocks. It won the Grand Prize for that year. This is how I got to know of R. L Stevenson with his poem to Princess Kaiulani. . .
  • I love this man...he was a true supporter of Lili'uokalani and along with his wife took to Ka'iulani after her mother passing telling her of her Scotch heritage when she was just a weeone.
