Both Kekaaniau and Kaohelelani claimed that "all other branches of the family extinct and other heirs dead."
Queen Liliuokalani was the hanai great grandaugter of a Kamehameha descendant named Nahuina (w) who was the daughter of Kini (w) and Kapule (k) the children of Hanuna (k), son of Kaoleioku the oldest son of Kamehameha.
The following is a list of those eligible to be successors of the Crown. Notice that Kekaaniau is Listed but Kaohelelani is NOT Listed:
