PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: STAY IN SCHOOL

What will it take to keep our haumana in school? How do we stop attrition and increase retention? Just by examining education in Hawaii, it is well noted that literacy skills are underdeveloped. One way to target this concern is having your child read to you. By using various reading strategies such as having the child 1. Make a prediction what the story is about by looking at the cover 2. Ask questions at the end: A. What is the story about? B. Who are the main characters in the story? C. What is the main idea of the story? D. Where is the setting of the story? E. Retell the story in sequence. 3. Child can point to the words while reading. These are several strategies to increase reading comprehension. DON'T FORGET that is the child needs to know basic sight words. Word games such as ABC's, Go Fish, etc can help build phonetic skills. Children need to be able to decode words at an early age. By the time a haumana reaches high school and skills are underdeveloped, he or she tends to look at school as a "threat" to HIS/HER identity. If you are using other skills to increase reading comprehension, please share. The more we help each other, the more literate our children become. Don't forget to compliment your child his/her success. Words of encouragement can help him/her become a resilient learner when he/she can use resources that foster critical thinking and problem solving. HELP EACH OTHER KEEP OUR KEIKI IN SCHOOL!
