Protesters Gather Outside OHA Over Army Plan On Makua Wahipana

Protesters are gathering this morning outside the Office of Hawaiian Affairs building to challenge a recent plan by the Army to excavate "recently discovered" sacred burial complexes in Makua Wahipana and allow visitor access to the site.

The protest, until 10:30 a.m., is being led by Alika Poe Silva, leader of the lineal descendants of those buried at Makua Wahipana. "The Army wants to exterminate and obfuscate our concerns and the integrity of the Kane temples in Makua Wahipana," Silva said in a statement.

The protesters say that OHA and Hui Malama have agreed to the Army plan despite the concerns of the lineal descendants and that they will be requesting a legal analysis and opinion from the Hawaii Supreme Court.

  • I totally agree with and support Alike Poe Silva. Messing around with our na iwi is hewa. It's like going to
Egypt and tearing down the pyramids to build condos, hotels, dumpsites, and roads. How about digging up Punchbowl Cemetary and put in a sanitation plant there? A shopping mall would be ideal at Arlington Cemetary, don't you think? Some of these cemetaries have a beautiful view and surroundings which is better for the living than the dead.

More of the white mans' Manifest Destiny doctrines which means our culture and heritage is meaningless to them. I think the U.S. has to de-occupy our nation so we can control what happens in our countrywith respect to our customs, values, culture, and heritage..
