Prince Jonah Kuhio was often called Ke Ali'i Maka'ainana (Prince of the People), and is well known for his efforts to preserve and strengthen the Hawaiian people. While a delegate of Congress, he spearheaded the effort in the passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act that provides lands for native Hawaiians to homestead. Prince Khi was also known for restoring the Royal Order of Kamehameha I and establishing the Hawaiian Civic Club.

The most notable achievement of Kuhio during this period was undoubtedly the creation of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, which was signed by President Warren Harding into law in 1921. Despite his wishes, the Act contained high blood quantum requirements, and leased the land instead of granting it fee simple, creating a perpetual government institution.

Kuhio died on January 7, 1922. His body was interred with the rest of his royal family at the Royal Mausoleum in Nu'uanu on the island of O'ahu.

Waianae Valley Homestead Community Association in partnership with Wai'anae, Makaha and Lualualei Hawaiian Civic Clubs will be hosting a special celebration to honor Prince Kuhio. The public is invited on Friday, March 26, 2010 at Kaupuni Community Park in Waianae Valley Homestead, 1-3 p.m. Program includes ho'okupu and lei aloha for the Prince, entertainment and light refreshments.
