ALOHA Kakou, e Hawaii,
This Memorial Day weekend when Americans are gathering at the gravesides of loved ones, Kai`ulani, James and many native Hawaiians will experience grief and frustration not knowing if the resting places of their ancestors, their Kapuna Iwi, are secure.

Kai`ulani and James appeared before Judge Watanabe on Wednesday. They will be assigned court appointed attorneys and are ordered to appear again on July 5. The charge is interfering with a government operation. They face a maximum one year in jail.

They asked to share this message to you:

Mahao no kou menemene. O ko oukou kako`o ka mea e ho`oulu ana i ka mana`olana a mana`opa`a i hiki 1a makou ke lanakila. Mahalo.

"Thank you very much for your compassion. Your support gives us hope and conviction that we will prevail."

Kauai Mayor Carvalho unders tands the challenge of preserving a living Hawaiian culture, and he cares what native Hawaiians, potential Island visitors and his constituents here on Kauai think. More petition signers mean greater likelihood that charges against Kai`ulani and James may be dropped. Thanks again for signing and please continue to forward the petition.
