  • Aloha kakou,

Here’s the mana’o behind the public action we are planning for 9AM, Thursday, December 30 in front of the Moana/Surfrider Hotel on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.

We are taking advantage of the fact that members of the international and national press are here to report on President Obama’s holiday in Hawaii.  They are very bored with the mundane things the president and his family are doing (after all, it is a vacation). The real reason they are here is, in the event an emergency or something sensational breaks somewhere in the world, they have the inside track for Obama’s response. Meanwhile, they are making the best of Obama eating shave ice to cool down (kinda inappropriate, yah? given the huge blizzard on the US East Coast).

Going out to the Kailua vacation compound to hold our demonstrations (as we did the last two years) was very effective. But this year we thought it would be better to focus on and develop some rapport with the media/press.  So we are going where they are staying, Waikiki, at the Moana Surfrider.  We want to use this opportunity to dialog with the press about our situation...to make friends and get them familiarized with this novel concept of Hawaiian independence.  Thus primed, they should be more receptive to our story and perhaps treat us favorably when Hawaiian independence becomes the hot topic. If we can give them a basic knowledge and develop some rapport now, they could be more open to us next year when our movement begins to hit its stride.

Our strategy right now is to develop rapport. For the past week, I have been placing materials (basic info and daily updates) at the correspondents work stations, and doing a little ho’omalimali. Hopefully, their interest will be piqued enough to come to our photo-op, press-brief.

The “hook” is Obama. That’s what will get the attention of the media/press, since Obama is their ‘main man’ and they are here to cover him. Our standard “Free Hawaii,” “Hawaiian Independence,” “Restore Hawaiian Independence” banners and signage will work well as we tie it into a basic message like: “Obama, please give us back our country” or
    “Obama, return Hawaii”...

I will also be printing flyers to give to passers-by so they get the message too.

Lets get as much mileage as we can out of this. Write letters to the editor asking Obama to return Hawaii or whatever angle you choose. The Star Advertiser is welcoming letters with a message to Obama. Maybe we can get a whole slew printed in the next few days before he leaves.

    Malama pono,

    Leon
