Hawaii Beats Army On Late Field Goal

University of Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns as Hawaii rallied to beat Army 31-28 in a wild non-conference football game today in West Point, N.Y.

Twice Army blew scoring chances late in the fourth quarter on a blocked 37-yard field-goal attempt and a fumble by Matt Jenkins at the Hawaii 28 that was recovered by UH.

The Warriors quickly drove down the field with only 24 seconds remaining and stunned the Army crowd on a 31-yard field goal by Scott Enos with 7 seconds left to get the win. Hawaii is now 1-1 for the season. Army is also 1-1.

Two costly second-half turnovers by Hawaii provided the fuel for a stunning 28-point about-face by Army as Hawaii finally stopped the scoring barrage with a 3-yard touchdown run by Alex Green that tied it at 28 with 5 minutes left in the third.

After Hawaii took a 21-0 lead on scoring strikes of 26 yards to Royce Pollard, 11 yards to Rodney Bradley and 48 yards to Kealoha Pilares, Army began to build a little momentum of its own with 28 unanswered points, including a 16-yard scoring run by Jarred Hassin to make it 21-14 on the PAT by Alex Carlton.

A quick Hawaii turnover on the ensuing kickoff had the Black Knights setting up shop at the Hawaii 24. Army eventually scored on a fourth and goal on a 1-yard run by Malcom Brown as Carlton added the PAT to make it 21-21 with 7:01 left in the third.

A Moniz sack and fumble had Army knocking at the door on the Warriors 11 on the ensuing series. Three plays later, Jenkins scored from 1 yard out to make it 28-21 after the Carlton PAT with 5:48 left in the third.

Early on, it was UH that had all the momentum as the Warriors steadily built a 14-0 lead over Army on the arm of Moniz and a defense that refused to yield to the option in the opening quarter.

Moniz threw a touchdown pass to Pollard of 26 yards and Enos added the first of four extra points to make it 7-0 with 10:26 left in the opening stanza. Moniz came right back and tossed his second scoring strike, this time to Bradley from 11 yards out to make it 14-0 with 7:01 left in the first.

Moniz kept at it in the second quarter with his third touchdown pass, this one a 48-yard bomb to Pilares to give Hawaii a comfortable 21-0 lead with 12 minutes left in the half. At this point, Moniz was 17-for-22 for 239 yards.

Army countered with a steady 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive of its own that culminated on a 4-yard scoring run by Brown. Carlton added the extra point to make it 21-7 with 4:32 left in the half. No one scored the remainder of the quarter.i_beats_Army_on_late_field_goal.html#ixzz0zFuFr3H5
