Accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower becomes focus of breakfast with President Barack Obama
By the Bradley Manning Support Network. April 21, 2011
This morning President Obama met with 150 donors for his 2012 reelection campaign over breakfast at the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco, California. However, the event turned interesting when nearly two dozen of his contributors pressed the president in song on the unjust confinement and tortuous treatment of alleged WikiLeaks whistle-blower US Army intelligence analyst PFC Bradley Manning. As the President spoke of the creative organizing that won him the 2008 election, over 10% of the attendees held up “Free Bradley Manning” signs and launched into a song entitled “Where’s our change?” As Secret Services agents attempted to grab the signs, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, and President Obama looked on. (Video)

U.S. Army Pfc. Colton Turner is a twenty year old conscientious objector. Presently the Army is playing mind games with him and has been acting less than honorably in processing his application for Conscientious Objector classification. On April 11th, after nearly six months of stalling and failing to properly address Turner’s request for recognition as a C.O. based upon his Christian faith and sincere beliefs, and instead responding to him in inappropriate ways, the Army issued Turner a whole new set of gear—the kind that is issued to a soldier who is about to be deployed. Turner received a new bulletproof vest, an assault pack, pocket knife, ammo pouches, grenade pouches, and a seatbelt cutter among other things. According to his attorney, James Branum, on April 11th, “It is unclear at this time what the command’s intentions are, but it appears that they may be planning to ignore the alleged AWOL and instead pressure Colton to go on a deployment and fight in violation of his conscience.” Turner’s defense team hopes to dissuade the command of this idea as Colton is resolved that he cannot deploy. But as of today, April 13th, Turner is now on a deployment list.

The international activist website Avvaz.org has joined the campaign to support Bradley Manning in a big way. About a half million people have already signed the statement that Bradley’s treatment as a “violation of his constitutionally guaranteed human rights, and a chilling deterrent to other potential whistleblowers committed to public integrity.“ The letter will be delivered to President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Add you name!
Nearly 300 of the top law scholars in the US have just called on the Obama administration to end the torturous treatment of Bradley Manning. The list of signatories includes Laurence Tribe, a Harvard professor who is considered to be America's foremost liberal authority on constitutional law. Professor Tribe taught constitutional law to Barack Obama, was a key backer of his 2008 presidential campaign, and was a legal adviser in the justice department until recently. US Army News Release: New Charges Against Pfc. Manning | Updated US Army Charge Sheet | Donate to Bradley's Defense Fund | Rally for Bradley at Quantico 3/20 | NY Times: Bradley Manning Jailed Naked
I’m shocked that the military opted to charge Pfc. Bradley Manning today with the capital offense of “aiding the enemy”. While the military is down playing the fact, the option to execute Bradley has been placed on the table. It’s beyond ironic that leaked US State Department cables have contributed to revolution and revolt in dictatorships across the Middle East and North Africa, yet an American may be executed, or at best face life in prison, for being the primary whistleblower. Millions of Americans, and even more internationally, clearly understand the contribution of Pfc. Manning towards not only freedom of information, but literally freedom itself. It’s hard for me to reconcile that with the US Army’s additional criminal charges against Pfc. Manning today.

The question that changed Michael Izbicki’s life appeared on a psychological exam he took not long after graduating in 2008 near the top of his class at the United States Naval Academy: If given the order, would he launch a missile carrying a nuclear warhead? Ensign Izbicki said he would not — and his reply set in motion a two-year personal journey and legal battle that ended on Tuesday, when the Navy confirmed that he had been discharged from the service as a conscientious objector.

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) calls on all U.S. military service members to refuse and resist any mobilization against workers organizing to protect their basic rights. IVAW stands in solidarity with the multitude gathered in Madison, Wisconsin and many other cities to defend their unions. We believe military service members are public employees too. It is dishonorable to suggest that military personnel should be deployed against teachers, health care providers, firefighters, police officers, and other government employees, many of whom are themselves serving in the National Guard.
