North Kohala Coast -- The Silent Treasure features interviews of Clyde "Kindy" Sproat, Papa Bill Akau and Oscar Ahuna telling why we need to preserve the coast from development. It is accompanied by the music of Kindy Sproat and David Gomes and narrated by Kinau Wilder. The film was made in 1990 by Kako'o predecessor Citizens for Protection of the North Kohala Coastline. Filmed and edited by Scott Sorenson. After almost 20 years the message is still the same: This generation must be the one to save the coast for the future. Now online! click here to watch it.

  • Aloha Stephanie,

Can you check with Oscar Ahuna and ask him if he has standing or relationship with Edward Niaupio in Waiamanalo? Or Oscar Ahuna Sr. I believe he does. Thanks for the treasure. Kaohi
    • Aloha Kaohi, I don't see him as we're separated by Kohala Mountains...and on those kinds of questions which are personal you should give him a call. Think he's listed in the phone book. My Pa'alua and Solomon cousins from Hokulea & Makali'i probably see the Ahuna's more than I do believe and they're all paddlers for Kawaihae or affiliated with Kawaihae Canoe Club.
  • Aloha and Mahalo Stephanie
Now I know what all those bumper stickers mean. My brother had one on his car. Mahukona and Lapakahi are twin ahupuaa, one cannot exist without the other. Papa taught us this. But it was good seeing Kindy, another bullet biter. He is absolutely right about not seeing as he sees it. Thank you again for this footage.

    • Hui Sharon must have been the "Save the Kohala Coast" black and gold bumper stickers. Yeah I was part of the committee approving those stickers we sold for $2 to raise legal funds for KAKO'O back in the day...SMILE
  • NOTE: In the footage of the coastline, a red tin roof building is the site of MAHUKONA which I have provided information in past blog posts, our current project. We, Maika'i Kamakani 'O Kohala, represented by NHLC and KAKO'O will be in Kona, our court case on August 31, 2009 - our legal battle with the County of Hawaii begins concerning MAHUKONA.
