Many of you have seen the news of the protest initiated by World Can't Wait-Hawai`i on the mainstream media.
President Obama and his family are in Hawai`i for a “vacation in paradise” – but he couldn’t escape protest.
At 10am on Saturday, the day after his Christmas arrival, supporters of World Can’t Wait lined the access to the street to the luxury vacation home where he is staying with big bright signs and banners: "Stop the War in Afghanistan," "Stop the War," "Stop Thinking Like an American – Start Thinking About Humanity!," and "Stop Torture" and more. They were joined by Friends of Sabeel who focused on ending U.S. support for Israel and instead showing support for the Palestinian people. Richard celebrated his 71st birthday by joining us with his up-side-down Hawaiian flag (symbolizing distress).
Across the street a smaller number of anti-choice protesters held bizaare signs against abortion.
Security was tight. A canal near the residence, which is usually filled with kayakers and canoe paddlers, was blocked. Instead large rubber rafts were filled with security with rifles at the ready. Access to the beach near the Obama residence was blocked. The street where he was saying was blocked to all but residences. Security constantly conveyed every movement But Obama still couldn’t escape. With only one exit and entrance to the residence, President Obama and his family and his entourage were forced to pass the protesters as they left the residence and they couldn’t help but to have seen the signs.
News of the protest was at the top of the news on the evening news, and pictures and articles appeared in the mainstream papers. The local stories have since been picked up by national stations. Once again, a small group of people succeeded in getting their messages against the war and torture out to tens of thousands! We urge you to get together a group of friends and stand along Kalaheo at the entrance to Obama's residence with your signs! The Obama family is expected to be here until January 2nd!
