HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police are investigating a series of shootings that took place in three areas across Honolulu early Friday morning.
Officials arrested and identified the suspect as 28-year-old Toby Stangel of Haleiwa.  He remains in custody at the Pearl City substation.
According to police, the first shooting took place at 12:43 a.m. at Kapahulu and Kapiolani Ave. Police say the suspect stopped behind several vehicles in traffic, approached them on foot and opened fire. The driver of the first vehicle, a 21-year-old man, was not hurt. The driver of the second vehicle, a 54-year-old woman, was hit multiples times in the head and was hospitalized in critical condition at a local trauma center. The passenger of the second vehicle, a 16-year-old female, was not hurt.
About 10 minutes later, a 24-year-old woman was driving on the H-1 Freeway heading west-bound between the Houghtailing and Likelike off-ramps. The suspect pulled up next to her and opened fire. She was hospitalized in critical but stable condition at a local trauma center. A 38-year-old man who was driving by in a separate vehicle was also shot. He was hospitalized in serious condition at a local trauma center.
At 12:58 a.m., the suspect slowly drove by officers who had stopped multiple vehicles on the Moanalua Freeway at the Aiea off-ramp and opened fire. No one was hurt.
A few minutes later, the suspect was stopped at the H-1 Freeway heading west-bound at the Kaamilo overpass. He was taken into custody without incident.
Police say Stangel is responsible for all the shootings. Officers recovered the weapon and Stangel's car. At this time, they do not believe there is any connection between the victims and do not have a motive.
"This is a very serious crime that needs to be thoroughly investigated," said Maj. Richard Robinson of the Honolulu Police Department.
Stangel will face multiple charges of first-degree attempted murder and firearms charges. He has five previous misdemeanor charges.
Police have re-opened the following closures:
The west-bound lanes of the H-1 Freeway at the Aiea off-ramp,
The west-bound lanes of the H-1 Freeway near the West Houghtailing off-ramp,
The intersection of Kapahulu, Kapiolani and King streets.

Toby Stangel, son of Honolulu pastor Mike Stangel, killed a motorist and wounded two others in a road rage rampage. Police said there appears to be no connections between the suspect and victims and no motive, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Stangel is being held on second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and gun charges. His father is the pastor of North Shore Christian Fellowhship Church in Haleiwa.
Tammy Nguyen, a 54-year-old Palolo mother of 10, died of gunshot wounds she sustained when a man walked up to her van — idling at a red light in Kaimuki — and opened fire. A 16-year-old girl was in the van with Nguyen; she was not shot.

Amielou Asuncion, a 24-year-old Kalihi resident, was in serious but stable condition at the Queen's Medical Center after being shot by a passing driver as she was driving west on the H-1 freeway in Kapalama.

Samson Naupoto, a 38-year-old Salt Lake man, was in stable condition at the Queen's Medical Center from gunshot wounds, also along H-1 in Kapalama. Source

The word is that the younger Stangel was on drugs. It would follow that this was probably not his first outburst, possibly the worse one. The guy was probably a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

  • Scary day for all citizens of Hawaii.  The tension was definetly in the minds of everyone.  Gaining trust and having a conversation with students is part of a days work, however, children discussing their problems with their parents is most important.  For reasons being that the child is owned by the parents and that the child and parent relationship is on going regardless as to whether he or she is in close proximity of each other.  Parents need to know where are their children at all times of the day.

Experts say there are warning signs students and teachers can look for in their peers that might signal violent tendencies or mental illness.

Education and wellness experts, including the U.S. Department of Education and the Centers for Disease Control, encourage students and teachers  to identify “early warning signs” in their peers to promote safer schools and prevent violence.

Some of those warning signs include social withdrawal, being a victim of violence, expression of violence in writings and drawings, uncontrolled anger and extreme prejudice or intolerance for differences.

Experts point out that just because an individual demonstrates one or more of these warning signs doesn’t mean he or she will become violent. However, they advise students who are concerned about their peers’ behavior to discuss the issue with someone they trust, such as a teacher, parent or school counselor.
