KANEOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) - A suspect is in custody in connection with a beating that left a Windward Oahu man in critical condition. Kaipoaloha Gomes, 28, turned himself in to police Thursday night.

It was the same night that friends and family of Joel Botelho waved signs along Kamehameha Highway near Benjamin Parker Elementary School, in an effort to raise awareness against violence.

The gathering was scheduled on the six-month anniversary of Botelho's shooting death.

"Today was just supposed to be for Joel," said classmate Shalomar Silva, who organized the event. "But it's way bigger than it is now. We have Micah Mench. We have Maka, fighting for his life."

Micah Mench was killed in a single-car crash on Kamehameha Highway north of Waikane April 30th.

Maka Torres is the victim in the Memorial Day beating that happened at Heeia Kea Pier. Botelho, Mench and Torres all graduated from Castle High School in 2002.

Botelho's mother believes part of the reason for the tragedies is violence.

"Our generation is coming up being raised on reality TV," she said. "It makes it almost okay for them to be violence and then not suffer any consequences for their behavior, and I'm concerned about that."

Botelho also expressed concern about another link.

"The common factor in all of this has been alcohol. It's alcohol related. We just need to get stronger laws," she said.

After sign-waving, the dozens who attended gathered together to pray for Torres, and to reflect about their tight-knit community.

"We want everybody to know what Kaneohe is really about," said Botelho's father, Chris Botelho. "These incidents do not reflect on what Kaneohe is about. There's beautiful people here, people who care."

"Lead by your example," Nonohe Botelho told the young men who attended the vigil. "We cannot do this any more. We cannot. We must not."

"This is how we going change them," Silva told the gathering. "One person at a time. And it starts with everybody right here. And as we go, it's gonna get bigger. Before you know it, it's gonna be back where we wanted it, so that's our goal."

As the gathering applauded, Silva added, "Pray for Maka."

  • I get really tired sometimes of the 'male' violence on maoliworld--but it traditionally exists.  The Lulu Bell club attacks older women and their voice because we are the first line of defense for young women and their child bearing or existing children.  Training, education and simply having to be cognizant to 'what's going on' in the world helps me to maintain ones vigilance on the newly forming and heightening violence. One needs to have a tenacious attitude about ones people and their safety.  The criminals are very sophisticated for they have managed to reach into the depths of history, mutate in ghettos or poverty-poor communities, and gain access to cyberspace.

Their addictions are too many to even try to get well anymore!

I have tried over the years to stop, prevent, and replenish fertile grounds for our children.  Violence is running amuck, too many incidences and not enough people concern or has the courage to stand up.  I often ask myself was I part of the problem too, instead of the solution? What can I do to step up to the level of violence that is happening?  How can I continue the much needed work to care for our children and their young mothers?

Many of us that grew up on Hawaiian Homestead before the Statehood existed in the minds of the 'outsiders' and they have a different outlook in life.  And those of us that are presently living on homestead as homesteaders based on that 'blood quantum' are fiercely attacked every day, not just on Maoliworld--but from people in the world.  By whom is my question that I am constantly asking? It is the military and their corporate male dominant networking gang of thieves that reach to the depths of hell every second of the day.  I also notice that they do well with single women (lonely type) in support of their agenda.  With both partners in hand--I am noticing the very violent raging young males have since joined into the Hawaiian movement Lulu Bell club as a social take over.  Having said that, I've had to step up another notch and in this shift... I really don't know!
