3-month effort removes hundreds from streets

Abercrombie's initiative gets needy people indoors and out of public areas, especially in the urban core

More than 445 homeless people moved off of island streets and out of emergency shelters during the span of Gov. Neil Abercrombie's 90-day homeless plan, which began in May and ends today. How to Help Emails and calls requesting assistance for a homeless person can be placed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Emails are preferred.

More than 445 homeless people moved off of island streets?

As a native Hawaiian practioner and someone that understands houseless over a span of 30 plus years, I don't think the governor and his 90 day homeless plan helped approximately 500 people in Hawaii to a permanent home.

What he and his 'I think we can solve the houseless problem' tean did was to create and even deeper problem.  The problem is embedded in the McKinley-Vento Act, but I'm sure not a person on his team understands the range of this Federal policy and its application to children in schools.  Nor does his team have the smarts to seek care for a pregnant mother on the streets with children are able to give a permanate home to the intended new born.  As for the old they are the first to die for they are most vulnerable and less worthy of attention.

For those of us who frequently visit the homeless do not agree to the governors plan, nor do we give any credit to their unsolutions.  What we have seen people getting sicker, and running up health care cost.  What we experienced more deaths.  The Department of Education as one said to me, "if we let one in--we have to let the rest in."  I got over the shock and moved on!  Teaching children how to survive on the streets are the better way of thinking and processing when encountering children and senior houseless persons.

What the governor didn't know how the houseless play the system!  And then roll back on the street, a month later because the system itself does not take the problem beyond the initial entry.  I'm sure many took advantage of this 3 month window.  If I was houseless, I too would take advantage of their services.  The question is what services these great angels were able to lay upon the houseless?  Was it permanent housing? A year? Or, until they break their rules!

August to Christmas are lonely and winter years even in Hawaii.  What percentage of that 445 will be back on the streets after the holidays?

Good try, try again and lets see how this work.  I am game for any solution that the state has to offer the poverty stricken babies-children and senior citizens.

  • Uncle John Pau is waiting for Annie's body to be taken to the mortuary from Wahiawa hospital, it should happen tomorrow (Wed.) and thereafter we should have services.
  • I really stress for my students to get involve with the houseless, but within reason.
