The Wai`anae Sustainable Communities Plan finally arrived at the City Council Mtg on Aug. 17th.  Aunty Pat, Granny and I (Shelley) were in attendance. Patty, Kimo and John Ka`opua were also there. Although we are on different sides of the Purple Spot issue, we all agreed that the planning process has been less than ideal. Granny delivered a simple message of "Keep the Country, Country" and Aunty Pat drove home the fact that the process was flawed and ought to be done over. She even implored the council to look closely at the ordnance that gives the head of DPP so much discretion into these planning documents--a point that dove-tailed nicely with what the folks from Ko`olauloa who are fighting the Envision Laie Project were saying.

Bill 50 is the bill number for the WSCP. Bill 49 was also introduced to take 35% of the gasoline tax for a fund to give Wai`anae a second access road. I think it is important that we articulate that we do not want that money used to make a highway through Pohakea, but instead used to repair Kolekole. We haven't talked about this much at our meetings, and really should have more discussion on it.

As expected, Bill 50 (the WSCP) was accepted, and now goes to the Zoning and Planning Committee which is now chaired by Ikaika Anderson. The bill can have as many committee hearings as it needs before going back to full council for it's 2nd reading, and then back to committee, and back to full council for it's final reading. Right now, the first Zoning and Planning Committee meeting is set for Thursday, September 8, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Nanaikapono Elementary School Cafeteria.
