I packed some of my things to teach Kalani Kealoha how to read. I was going to teach him how to use script writing as a means to reconnect with his brain cells.  I also , took a book from my shelf called Whale Rider to read with him.  Only tonight I found out what his last name was--I was told that he hung himself.  He was homeless living at the boat harbor with other people.

My friend didn't have much prepared so he went to McDonalds and ordered enough for every one to eat Cheeseburgers, and apple turnover tonight was a real treat.

So tonight, I am thinking about the book we read together and how thrilled he was about being able to read several pages.  Just to have my student make an effort to read an unfamilia word in print is ecstatic! It was a simple first grade book about a dog and a cat.  I was looking forward to reading out loud the Whale Rider.

I just don't have words to say to express how I feel.  Those of us that feed the homeless knows that it gives them hope to live as well as to better themselves.  But, when we loose a spirit a soul it effects all of us deeply.  Especially when he is so young.
