Aloha Ohana,

Just a quick reminder that the Environmental Justice Working Group is getting together tonight at LCC-W at 6 pm.  Sorry for any double postings, just want to make sure everybody who should be invited is.

We'll go over what happened at the last set hearings (woot-woot! a little celebration is in order) and what to expect in the next few months.

Some of the MA'O guys and UH students will be there to learn more about the  issues facing the Coast, and bring some of their academic expertise to the effort, as well as also to work on more direct-action style "get out the voice" type events.

It should be a lively get together, hope to see you there.  Please spread the word.

Aloha,
Marti.

  • Aloha,

    Happy New Year Ohana!

We are off to a great start.  The hearings before the LUC went really well.  Look for a post on our blog later today with highlights.

In the meantime, hope you can all join in on the next Environmental Justice Working Group meeting THIS FRIDAY.  That's Jan. 14th at 6 pm at LCC-Waianae... probably room 5.  Bring snacks, we will have a lot to celebrate. :)

    Draft Agenda:
    1.  Re-play of highlights from the LUC hearing -- I am hoping somebody can do a Kiwi accent to adequately recount Gary's slamdunk testimony.  And then somebody needs to reinact Puakea's amazing and very professorial shutdown on the developer. :0)

    2. Preparing for the next set of hearings -- direct action time!  Time to take a break from the awkward hearing rooms and start telling our story, our way.

The LUC will definitely be meeting on Feb. 2nd. That will be the last hearing to turn in evidence.  And then there will be at least one more hearing for "final arguments" -- probably at the end of March, beginning of April.  This is the meeting to bring everyone out to share their mana'o on the proposed industrial park -- we know from other recent LUC decisions that public testimony makes a big difference in their decision.  The LUC has to make a decision by the end of April.

Tentatively, we are expecting the City Planning Commission to meet on Feb. 16th (it's not for sure yet).   And in the meantime, we should start meeting with City Council members.

    3. Enlisting the EPA's help to protect Waianae's environment from contamination.  We'll have a report back from those who met with the head of EPA's region 9 (that's the US West Coast and Hawaii).  And a discussion about how to get to second base with him (hee hee...).  He is coming back in March for a conference in Honolulu.

And we can add to this list of agenda items at the beginning of the meeting.

    Hope to see you there!

    Aloha,
    Marti.
