Mahalo for all your kind words Miliaulani, this was a difficult interview. Since May 10th this was the first time Kaimana cried and was able to share his feelings and observation.
How can kanaka do this to kanaka? How callous and uncaring. I understand you are doing your job, orders being given to you by higher-ups but you can at least treat these people with dignity and care. Property/home may belong to DHHL but personal belongings belong to the family. They are limited to 15 minutes to collect their belongings and now in order to retrieve the rest of their things they must pay $2800 to get them out of storage? Unbelieveable! Why was the family not given advance notice? Isn't that proper protocol? Aren't the thugs (sheriffs) suppose to identify themselves, carry their badges, hand over proper paperwork? These tactics are unacceptable!!!! Our own people have turned against each other. It makes me ill. How can you stand there in utter disrespect for the kupunakane who wears depends and can't walk or fend for himself? This story is utterly despicable and shameful for those who treaded on the dignity of the Kaihana 'ohana. Their struggle will endure long after you have moved on to the next family to evict. Auwe!
