Children have this shut off switch when they want to be defiant (homegrown explanation) and my hanai grandson do this pretty easily.  After a spanking at Pokai Bay, we both took time out last evening to learn about safety, respect, and responsibilties in our daily life.  Children can learn and adults too!  Apologies excepted from both sides, we sat at the computer to read about the Summer Solistic June 21, 2011 and the longest day.  We talked about why Uncle Pono Kealoha, grandma and Joshua went to Makai Kapiolani Park for private moments and a talk with people in the park (houseless).  A bit of humanity needed for we are humans not cartoon super heros!  Josh is going through a not/real Pokemon phase!

Given that this is too much information for a six year to grasp, I pulled up various childs network on UV.  Joshua wanted to play in the sun yesterday after swimming lessons, I wanted to get to the shade and out of the sun.  I didn't plan it well cause I neglected to put sun screen on my little grandson before swimming lessons at 2:00 pm.  He was throwing a tantrum and that sent my patience to top.  Grandma's remedy-spanking (not good!).  Like I say there is a turn off switch, and in that moment (unsafe), I have to demand who is in charge!  Josh knows at the age of 6 years old that he has to kick in with understanding when my energies are low, its not safe, and time is of the essence.

During the next few days the UV is at 12+ (very high) in Hawaii, given that I am smart (not true sometimes) I am responsible for his safety.  What I found out yesterday is that 15 is just as good as 30 for sun screen protection, but not sure how good.  So I'm slabbing that stuff on Joshua every morning according to the childrens video and information.

Before this we have had many fights in the parking lot infront of the whole world, until his mom got hit by a car, luckily she recovered.   Joshua was a runner that's just because he was strapped to a car seat on long rides on the mainland.  It took a lot of hollering to get him to not run once released from the car seat.

  • I spent the better part of the morning since 7:30 am reading and writing with Josh.  He has to earn his TV, computer, and DS time.  Five bucks (fake) each book and five extra for constructive response = earned $10.00.  TV, computer and DS time cost $10.00 each.  It's just amazing how much of a conversation has to process out this negotiations.  Earning real allowance was easier in my days.  Restructuring behavior is so important because of the science and math issues in any given learning institution and Summer Fun is an extention of that institution too.

    Have a nice day!

  • Okay, I totally messed up! Josh went to Summer Fun and when I picked him up, he got first warning.  So now, we have a reprogramming to do!  A $100 (fake money) weekend. He has to earn his DS, TV and Computer time.  Doing chores, reading, writing, phonics, constructive response, super math problems and a bit of science.  seven hours each day!

That's what happens when you spare the rod, the child takes his not yet understood frustrations out on his partner-friends.

We have a three day weekend because of furlough!  so lots of time to earn money (fake) for good behavior!  Have a super weekend!

Fortunately, I have a lot of resources for elementary school children.

  • I could take the easy way out and put Josh on perscribe drugs, or I can give him attention and lots of talking too.  Or, I could be a dog poop and do what some parents are doing--give the kid liquid cough drops for a 10 to 12 hour sleep through.  This is so nuts, but a wake up call.  Spanking is not the solution either, so a rigid discipline is in the planning.  I'm looking into biofeedback for children.  In the mean time here is some information as to what Ritalin is about:

I don't believe in this stuff!!  Spanking is not a solution either--use ones mouth as in spoken words is a better understanding and direct route to the brain cells.

Ritalin (methylphenidate) is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.

Ritalin is used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Ritalin is also used in the treatment of a sleep disorder called narcolepsy (an uncontrollable desire to sleep). When given for attention deficit disorders, Ritalin should be an integral part of a total treatment program that may include counseling or other therapies.

Ritalin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Drug companies are ruthless! This posting does not give anyone the right to hit a child either, but yesterday crap I lost it!  Just take a step forward....
