the Board members of Pua Mohala i ka Po, the International Forum on Globalization, and the coordinators of the Moana Nui 2011 Conference would like to mahalo everyone for a successful start to our three-day conference!

through the two sessions conducted yesterday, Day 1, by our team of awesome volunteer facilitators (trained by the Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution), we present a DRAFT version of a list of statements conjured by conference participants. please feel free to comment and add suggestions below.

Moana Nui—Day 1

Statements and Reflections Upon Which to Build

Strategies for Building Communities/Women and Grassroots (routes) Globalization

Building healthy, strong, sustainable communities will require intentionally working from a value set that prioritizes Indigenous[1] knowledge and values and ways; contributions of marginalized disenfranchised groups; and the practice of self -sustainability. These will inform practices and strategies:

Communication strategies
Leadership
Collaboration/coalitions
Community based efforts

The protocol used by governmental/APEC is constrained by the system by which it operates and does not reflect on the how we operate, which is through reciprocal retention and sacred kinship on:

malama ‘?ina
tiro long (give honor to the sky)
tiro pule (give honor to the sky and land)
tiro saot (give honor to sea)
tiro womi meinism (all of us together)

Honoring the role as Pacific Islander women, women’s identity, women’s responsibilities, and space.

Respecting diversity and differences.

Globalization, Development and Geopolitics

We declare a pono (fair), just, and equitable) global trade and local economies. We demand transparency, and seek to understand and comply with all the voices of affected communities, and to promote a healthy environment.

Pacific Resources, Lands, Economies

The communities of Moana Nui have the right to self-determination over our bio-cultural resources, in order to fulfill our kuleana and have a balanced quality of life and perpetuate our cultural heritage.

Native Rights, Economies and Governance—Resistance to Global Powers

We, the native and Indigenous people of Moana Nui, and the supporters of the values of Moana Nui, shall successfully and peacefully resist the influences of global powers and economies. In pursuit of a quality of life relevant to our places and our culture, we shall assert our kuleana which includes, but is not limited to: the right to feed ourselves without fear persecution, access to sufficient natural resources and a clean environment (air, land and water) as we move toward a decentralized local economy.

Religious and Spiritual Perspectives

We affirm that we have a sacred kinship with papa and each other. We call for a transition from exploiting Moana Nui’s bio-cultural resources to a reciprocal kinship based on aloha and malama ‘?ina which is pono.

3. bio-cultural = natural and cultural resources are integrated

4. aloha ‘?ina = love for the land

5. malama ‘?ina = caring for the land

6. pono = righteous or correct

APEC and TPP: What we must know, what should we o?

APEC and TPP is the agenda of the 1% at the expense of the 99% and the planet! We oppose APEC and TPP because they:

Deny the rights of Pacifika and indigenous peoples.
Fail to protect the environment.
Violate fair trade and labor rights.
Fail to promote decentralized and localized economic models.

Militarization and Resistance in the Pacific

*Addressing

1. any type of military testing and its effects

2. military encroachment and its consequences

3. destruction of natural resources and historical sites/resources

4. methods for educational, legal, political, and grassroots resistance

*Action Plan

1. Coordinating actions and creating a sense of solidarity for people of the Pacific who are currently suffering acts of harm at the hands of the US military.

1. The corporate media keeps badgering us, “Why do you people oppose APEC?”

The short answer is, APEC is a toxic Wall Street Derivative!

Of course, the longer answer is that, 99% of 7 billion people today can clearly see that current Economic Catastrophe is a direct consequence of 500 years of a capitalist Economic Climate Change, and we?re very near the end of this historic cycle. Hence, we must all urgently work toward a new future that will be 99% more equitable, sustainable and collaborative. We people of the Pacific are committed to safeguard our inalienable sovereignty of a non-privatized political, economic & cultural environment. This is our collective response & mana?o to the APEC agenda.

2. “The most important idea that you want everybody to walk away with today related to resisting global power is we need to commit and forget about trying to fix a broken system. As Kaleikoa said, it is ??ina that which feeds us and not real estate.

3. Action: create curriculum based on vision of a demilitarized self-sufficient place. Kupuna and makua teach the young people the strategies and let the young people implement.

4. Do not give up your first class citizenship in your own land for second class status.
