KALANI'OPU'U'S FEATHER CAPE
An extraordinary treasure that will be featured in the Westpac Long Gallery in 2017.
This feathered cape was given to Captain Cook on his third - and fatal - Pacific voyage, by King Kalani’opu’u, as an official welcome to Hawai’i in 1778.
The cape is made from the feathers of at least four species of birds - the red-feathered i’wi honeyeater, which is a distinct species of Hawai’i, the yellow O’o Moho and Mamo, and a cockerel with black plumage.
This cape was kept by his widow, and sold to the Museum in 1894.
