As a part-Hawaiian, I don't feel as if there's been any shortage of people trying to "step up to lead the kanaka maoli." The problem, primarily, is that there are too many of them. And while I agree the only way for progress (or even to stem the bleeding) would be for greater unity, there are just too many fundamentally different views on "how things should be" for there not to be disagreements. Saying Hawaiians should all agree is like expecting all African Americans to agree or vote a certain way.
Disagreements are natural. It's how they're handled and how the unavoidable conflict is managed is what's key. The fact that the opposition of some Hawaiian groups has been co-opted by non-Hawaiian, Mainland groups as part of a campaign against the Akaka Bill is worrisome to me.There are plenty of kanaka maoli that can trace their roots back to Kamehameha, Kaumuali'i, and Lili'uokalani (who didn't have any offspring of her own); however, few give themselves the title of "King" or "Queen." Your comment reminded me of the whole brouhaha eight years ago over Abigail Kawananakoa's choice of seating (http://starbulletin.com/98/07/17/news/story5.html) during a Life magazine photo shoot... :)
Really, though, this thread has made me curious, what are the different groups? Who are the various leaders and what are the linkages and rivalries? Lots of names come up a lot, but the mix is so deep that I can't keep them straight. - Pzarquon from http://www.hawaiithreads.com/archive/index.php/t-6408.html

Akahi Nui
James Kimo Akahi, also known as Akahi Nui (born on Maui, February 19, 1941[citation needed]) is a claimant to the lapsed throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
Contents[hide] |
[edit]Claim to the Throne
Akahi claims to be a descendant of Kamehameha I, the first Hawaiian king, and Queen Liliuokalani's sister; documentation of these claims has yet to be produced. [1]
Akahi Nui's claim to the throne is controversial among the Hawaiian sovereignty community, with at least one sovereignty group filing a mock cease and desist order in the Hawaii Bureau of Conveyances and presenting it to Akahi Nui, saying that he has "no right, authority or power to act in the name of the Kingdom of Hawaii or its government".[2]
[edit]Coup Attempt
In August 2008 Nui and a small group calling themselves the Kingdom of Hawaii Nation briefly took control of Iolani Palace in an attempted coup d'état in order to reoccupy the throne, much similar to the coup of Yukio Mishima in 1970. Approximately two hours after their entering the grounds, they were arrested on charges of burglary.[3][4][5]

115 years after the U.S.S. BOSTON turned it’s guns on Iolani Palace and imprisoned Hawaii’s beloved Queen Liliuokalani, STATE OF HAWAII governor Linda Lingle had officials from the Department of Public Safety, the Honolulu Police Department, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, and what appeared to be a SWAT team converged on the steps of Iolani Palace to remove His Royal Hawaiian Majesty Akahi Nui, his Queen and Cabinet Ministers, his bonded Royal Guard, and a U.S. federal Provost Marshall..............................
In a telephone interview with Mayze Danials of Las Vegas His Royal Hawaiian Majesty Akahi Nui, Lineal Decent Sovereign Heir of Hawaii and Trustee of the Kingdom of Hawaii Nation Ministry Trust stated: “… I was cuffed and taken by force from my own property. I was released at the jail with no charges, I told them I was the owner of that property and all those people were my Cabinet members, House of Nobles, and Royal Guards…”
Official documents at the Hawaii Bureau of Conveyances verify His Majesty’s claims. The Deed to Iolani Palace (doc. No. 2000-176035 also identified as T.M.K.: 2-1-25-2 filed on December 14, 2000 at 10:OO AM) confirm that the Palace Deed is held by the Kingdom of Hawaii Nation Ministry Trust, Majesty Akahi Nui, Trustee. Other key documents include the Deeds to the Islands of Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii all filed in the Bureau of Conveyances at 11:30 AM on January 11, 2002, all giving the STATE OF HAWAII and United States government 30 days to challenge or rebut his claim to title. Every Deed is accompanied by a STATE OF HAWAII Exemption From Conveyance Tax. The Island Deeds are identified as follows: (Kauai) Doc No(s). 2002-005575 thru 2002-005576, (Oahu) Doc No(s). 2002-005573 thru 2002-005574, (Maui) Doc No(s). 2002-005579 thru 2002-005580, (Hawaii) Doc. No(s). 2002-005577 thru 2002-005578.
Among those arrested with His Majesty and charged with second degree burglary was Her Royal Highness Akahi Wahine, his queen and Minister of the Interior for the Kingdom of Hawaii. When asked for a statement for this article Her Royal Highness replied, “Who has the authority to charge us with burglary when we were at the palace on the authority of the lawful owner, the King, for a special assembly of Palace Ministers, and accompanied by the Royal Guard and U.S. federal Provost Marshal Love? Even the sergeant from the Honolulu Police Department who was standing right there outside the Diamondhead gate stated that he had no jurisdiction.” Eyewitnesses confirmed HRH Akahi Wahine’s statement, also asserting that a woman who claimed to be assaulted by the Provost Marshall was a State of Hawaii employee who “reeked of alcohol”. It is unclear what the King of Hawaii is being charged with. HRH Akahi Wahine and 5 others charged with burglary, are all identified as diplomatic passport bearing members of the King’s Cabinet and supported by official documents at the Kingdom of Hawaii Interior Ministry.
Several members of the Royal Guard have been charged with trespassing.
Prior to the August 15th incident 3 warrants had been issued under the authority of U.S. Provost, one of which was a federal protective custody order. 73 year old U.S. federal Provost Marshal Love was the last of those arrested at the Palace to be released and it is not clear what charges he was being held on, or when a hearing will convene.
Many honest Americans are unaware that the 1959 “Statehood” Plebiscite for Hawaii failed to meet the standard of the Laws of Nations and the United Nations Decolonization Act:
1) There was no option given for return to autonomy, only for statehood or territory.
2) U.S. Military and U.S. citizens participated in the vote which should have been limited to na kanaka maoli (descendants of the indigenous aboriginal people of Hawaii).
Many honest Americans are unaware that the 1984 San Francisco Tribunal ruled that the Hawaiian people have been subjected to genocide (as defined by the 1984 UN Genocide Convention Act) by the United States (see St. Thomas Law Review 1984).
STATE OF HAWAII Governor Linda Lingle makes her home very comfortably at another private estate belonging to Queen Liliuokalani, and in statements to the media continually refers to His Majesty and his Cabinet and Royal Guard as “activists”, despite her failure and that of the preceding administration to successfully challenge or rebut His Majesty’s claims to the Crown and Throne of Hawaii. In fact, His Hawaiian Majesty Akahi Nui’s persistent claims to the crown, throne, and soil of Hawaii have never been successfully challenged by anyone, including the United States federal government.

Please! This guy is just one "ruler."
Genuine Hawaiian Activists are embarrassed by this groups invasion of the sacred palace, damage they caused, and hurt to innocent civilians. Real Aloha? Real ignorant! Just because this episode fits your world view, sometimes the indiginous underdog is really just a felon and a dog. The federal "provost marshall" is a self-appointed retiree from the mainland. Many other Hawaiian groups have stronger claims than this clown! Check it out before you inflame with dramatic language. Facts are more pursuasive than passion. That's what Liliuo believed; are you wiser than the Queen? Auwe!

Greeting Akahinui and supporters.
I too am looking forward to the restoration of our government that was taken away in 1893 by the U.S Marines, businessmen and the American Minister Stevens however the Sovereignty of our country by the many treaties made by the major naval powers of the world at that time has still continued today. Our country exists today " in rem". As we end the illegal American Occupation of Hawaii. We who look to the laws of our kupuna to guide us have made provision for the voting of a new monarch. I wish well in qualifying genealogical, cultural, political, international law, treaties of Hawaii and protocols of the office of monarch. I am many will try. Lastly it's the vote of Hawaii's nationals that will vote in the end. Aloha to you and yours. Gata Onna |

Sadly, Hawaiian language and customs continued into decline up until about 1970. In 1978 the US recognized Hawaiian as the second official language of the state (Hawai'i is the only state in the US to have two official languages, English and Hawaiian). A large push went underway to preserve the language and culture and that push continues today as more and more people are once again speaking the Hawaiian language.
At the same time another push, from the native Hawaiian population itself, also began to try to undo the wrongs that had been committed against Hawai'i by the US in the illegal overthrow of the nation. It is very important to note that in 1993, President Bill Clinton and Congress signed a law that formally apologized to the Hawaiian Nation for false imprisonment of their Queen and the illegal takeover. However, the US government stopped short of offering any reparations or fixing the situation.
Currently there are several movements underway to try to restore at least some Hawaiian sovereignty. Various government groups as well as local Hawaiian groups are all attempting to correct and restore the proper order. Unfortunately the US government seems bent on classifying Hawaiians as Native American Indians and putting them under the control of the Bureau of Indian Affairs - something that is not only laughable - but so obviously wrong.
However, the Hawaiians know how to do it correctly. Akahi Nui, a direct descendant of Queen Lili'uokalani's sister was crowned King of Hawai'i in 1998 by the Hawaiian people. He has been recognized by the United Nations as the true representative of Hawai'i and the Hawaiian people and he has renewed treaties with other nations with the exception of the US. His Majesty Akahi Nui travels the world with a Kingdom of Hawai'i passport that is recognized by most nations.
Today, Hawai'i is emerging to once again to be the jewel of the Pacific it originally was. Attempts to maintain the culture, language and heritage of the islands are undertaken not only by locals, but also by people from all over the world. Hula has spread to Japan and the mainland and the language is being taught in schools and spoken more and more. Both local and haole alike are pushing together for the preservation of the Hawaiian culture. Only time will tell if Hawai'i can once again become an independent nation, out from under the shadow of the US - we can only hope.
Read more about the history of Hawai'i with these books:
Hawai shouldn't be part of the USA, it could be a protectorate of USA but keeping the monarchy as it was in some parts of the colonial africa otherwise it could be an Independent kingdom like the island of tonga (but it would be an unpopular idea because the people consider itself fine being an state of the union).
ReplyIt is almost imposible to restore the hawaian monarchy but there is a chance because already exist some independentist groups, and i think that many of those groups are suporters of a kingdom of hawai rather than an republic of hawai.
Hi from Argentina.
Many if not most native Hawaiians probably do favor independence or autonomy or some sort of restoration of their kingdom. However, the problem has been immigration. Native Hawaiians are a tiny minority on the islands and the majority American & Asian population has no connection to the old monarchy or desire for a change to the current situation.
