November 15, 2010

Aloha kakou,

In our last letter to you, we noted we were on the agenda for the next Local Advisory Panel meeting on Nov. 16, 2010.  It turns out there was no LAP meeting scheduled for that day.  We apologize for that mistake, but we still want to meet with you!

Please attend an informational meeting with the Ho'okako'o Board of directors on Nov, 16, 2010 at the Kamaile School Cafeteria at 4:30 p.m.  It has been a busy week and we have a lot of progress to share with you, including the Transitional Leadership Team and our plans for grade 10.  We have received questions from parents that we'd like to address and invite you to email any questions you have to contact@hookakoo.org.

We know this meeting extends your day, but we hope you will make the time to attend. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on the next level of student achievement for Kamaile Academy!

Mahalo,

Keith Vieira

  • Amelia,

Last night was a real Kawiwi Hill kilo game night. The bargning chip was their career goals, and maybe we will give a diploma to your kids. Nasty gamers!!!

The molokai phallic cult is heavy on this board. I kinda wondered where leizie lingle girls were going. looks like they're in Waianae. I'm for gay marriages, but dike fights--ugh!!! Keith Vieira is the biggest carrot of them all!

The thing is RTTT funding the students have to test out in their senior year. To date that's a no go. Maybe five students at the most can test out.

There is senior projects (my preference), diploma, drop out (4140) and certificate. But--it seems to me this board is going for RTTT at Kamaile Academy.

I told the parents that if their child gets a diploma through social promotion then their child can get into a union and the union's will give them math and English classes. They will pick up where we left off, or neglected academically.
  • I typed my first posting early this morning, and I just reread what I wrote, in hopes that I followed my 4 am line of thinking at tonight’s meeting.
    These are my concerns:
    Congenial birth
    Junior Kindergarten
3rd grade results on the HSA testing
7th grade Math and Language Arts Benchmarks
3rd quarter grades that are embedded in concrete
If student opts for 4140 (student to leave campus), then he/she needs a transitional program to gain a GED or Diploma
Then, to transition over to a community college

These are bottom feeders in a community and in a corporate setting they’re just ‘cash crops.’ Micronesian students know what cash crop means, I learned from the best group of people that could live through adversity.

These are the choices that I raised tonight at Kamaile Academy. One, they should not allow this board to cause their children to become drop out students. This is what every parent is facing on the Waianae coast that there is a strong possibility that their child drops out of school. .Secondly, they should socially promote these youngsters. With the RTTT funding that is not possible of course. These youngsters may have to test out which is my most concern. However, some schools in the American education have the option to do a ‘Senior Project’ which is costly to parents, and very time consuming. One would need research skills to do a project which are missing elements of teaching from most schools because of inexperience teachers, or lots of other reasons. Students need graphic technology, formal presentation skills and lots of writing.

Our children can do the projects because they are creative thinkers, resilient, and have so much to offer as far as their ideals in life on the Waianae Coast which to me is invaluable because we see the last of Na Kanaka on all fronts in Waianae. Up this on 3-d and it’s fantastic and very marketable for many generations to come.

Five years ago, I got fired from Kamehameha Schools because my children were sitting in their chairs when the bean counter showed up. She was disappointed that my students were sitting in class. From that incident we lost Adult Education at Nanakuli Learning Center. I checked today, because I noticed lots of cars at night. I found out that a month ago they brought back Adult Education again. But, there is no Basic Education so they are not fully taking care of the drop outs in Nanakuli.

This also happened to Kawika at Olelo the person that did the firing was third placement for Bishop Estate Trustee. Kamehameha Schools have a different outlook as far as culture values and the village raising the child. These two components are missing from their psyche when it comes to economic endeavors or status.
I also spoke about Kahuku High School and how their football team was unfairly treated. How these parents have been standing up to the DOE since Donnis Thompson was the Superintendent.

A bit tired want to say more, but need some sleep.
  • Parents and staff are excepting what the board is saying, what they don't get that we will in two to three years add to the 41 40's tally on the Waianae Coast. It has taken Nanakuli High School five years to wake up to the 4140's that Kamehameha Staff had created. The second problem that I believe has not been resolved is stealing social security numbers and banking it for grants. The second part to the social security numbers that they are locked down at the community colleges instead of the four colleges.

Just to give you an example of what other parents are doing.

But first, one must do some "thinking process" to bring the status of Physical Education in the schools to a higher status, children must write, dress up, and do physical participation. This is a huge process of elimination for students for they can fall into a 4140 if they are not careful.

The Kamaile Academy, have to have a strong attitude like Kahuku.

"Co-captain George Tafuna could only shrug.

"All we can do is get ready for college and our next sports," he said."
