Position may be converted from 11- to 9-months based on programmatic needs. Duties: Under supervision of the Assistant Dean, plan, implement and assess a holistic academic Hawaiian studies program. Also, under general supervision, teach transfer and non-transfer level courses in Hawaiian studies, and/or Hawaiian performance art, etc., and perform related work including but not limited to developing teaching strategies, instructional materials and methods which 1) use computers in instruction where appropriate; 2) integrate instruction of appropriate thinking skills into course content; 3) use competency-based instruction; and 4) address the needs of community college students. Develop and maintain an approved program of professional self-development; prepare/revise course outlines; create and assess student learning outcomes; develop curriculum; develop alternative delivery systems for Hawaiian courses; participate in departmental faculty and administrative committees, community service, in-service training; advise students, and provide evaluation of students. Identify students’ learning needs and implement constructive responses to them. Must be able to independently plan, organize and carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments. May require teaching evenings, Saturdays, and at off-campus sites. Duties and responsibilities may include instructional assignments involving distance education. Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught. Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree in Hawaiian Studies, or Bachelors degree in Hawaiian Studies and three years related work experience. Desirable qualifications: Experience in education planning, program development, and evaluation. Experience and commitment to community involvement and service. Ability to teach in more than one area within the discipline. Demonstrated ability and experience in teaching hula or Hawaiian performance arts. Successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level as substantiated by student and peer evaluations/assessments. Ability to work with students, peers, and staff. Knowledge and understanding of community college philosophy. Sensitive to cultural diversity. Demonstrated commitment to professional self-development. Effective oral and written skills. Pay range: C2A, $4612/month minimum. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
