Mahalo to all participants in the 213th commemoration of the Battle of Nu'uanu early this morning at the Pali lookout. Weather was perfect: calm, mild winds, Konahuanui was clear to its summit, while Lanihuli carried a cloud banner. Ho'okupu were presented, and mo'olelo was heard of the background and the history leading up to the battle of Nu'uanu and the unified Hawaiian kingdom. Mahalo to Halau Ku Mana and kumu Kawika Mersberg for their ho'okupu of hula and oli, and for wonderful words from kumu hula Kapi'olani Ha'o. Stirring and engaging mo'olelo from Kalama Cabigon informed all present on the significance of the battle of Nu'uanu and the need for all Hawaiians to come out to commemorate the pivotal events in our own history. Pule and oli were heard; kahea were answered, prayers offered to akua and 'aumakua, prophesies of Keaulumoku, and place chants for Nu'uanu given. The presence of both kumu Lake and kumu Franklin Pao were felt, though they could not be there physically. Mahalo and aloha a nui to both of them.
