I believe the heart of understanding the ahupua'a system - is understanding that our ancestors had a deep connection with nature as well as values like malama 'aina - this connection was very clear as they were stewards and respectful of any resource they used.

while our ancestors certainly did have complex resource management systems in place, (some of them still used as models for contemporary resource management plans), they also caused the total extinction of many endemic species, often for purely decorative regalia, which to me is an example of very poor resource management.
