    • Aloha  Danielle Kapiolani Grauman,

We have a common ancestor connection of Umi-a-Liloa. There is a Family Reunion of the Stevens and Purdy line that also ties into Umi-a-liloa. The Face Book page has some information as well.

Also My Ohana and I is cleaning and rebuilding Pakaʻalana in Waipiʻo Valley where I grew up.

      Mahalo,

      Melvin G. Mason Jr.

    • Mahalo for sharing Danielle Kapiolani Grauman. The name Makakaualii is so familiar.

    • Makakaualii was another name for Gov. Kuihelani who fathered many children and was the grandfather of Charles Kanaina. ( relations to out family).

He also went by Kauhaikane, Kamakane, Kamakau, Kamakaaualii.  The name Makakaualii was also the name of a Chief further back that I am sure was related to the one I am referring to.

  • Aloha....I was wondering if Jean ileialoha Keale, Beniamina of Niihau...does she have family that was living in Laie?  We have a Ben (Beniamina) Kaupono 1860-1910 married to Awana (w) had son Niuolaa Beni Opio 1877 who married Married Benson 1867..all in Laie...let me know if you have any info...

    Aloha

  • I'm working on a pedigree family through my geneaology instructor who looked up my Kane family from Kauai, and I'm puzzled as to how she could tie our family with David Iokua Kalakaua, spouse Mikihala Maliko of Maui, daughter Kawahine Kalauawa Kalakaua. I'm still working on all this, just started since May. I'm working with Familysearch.org, ancestry.com, archives.com, now this site. If you have any information that might help, I'd appreciate it.Frances
    • I have found that the best way to connect the hawaiian side is to use the "Ka Nupepa Kuakoa" online archives. I have retrieved mele's about my ancestors and their genealogy. Also, USE THE HAWAIIAN ONLINE ARCHIVES. I always order birth, marriage, and death records for anyone I know. The names of parents will be on that which will help you to cut away at some of the mystery. Don't give up. I recently discovered the beautiful story about my great grandmother, Kaha'opulani (the one who nursed Kamehameha) and how Nae'ole was her half brother and first cousin. It is amazing the things you can learn. Also, if you are able, use your relative who are alive. I know old customs instruct us not to ask if it is not given, but with so much mo'olelo gone because of the loss of grandparents from the old hawaiian days, we will lose it all if we dont ask. I feel better about being a little annoying or brazen to my relatives, than risk losing and dishonoring my ancestors who help me to understand who I am as well as helping to pay homage to their lives!! KEEP GOING!

Also, The name Soares...were you born into that family or married into it. My Auntie Sheila is married to Ronald Soares. I am close with my Cousin, Roxanne Mapuana Soares (married to John Cottell). Are you related?

      Kapio
