Hemo the Invasives so the Natives can grow

Reforesetation, Botanical Structure Systems, Erosion Control, types of plants to consider, other considerations....

Lets do it gang

So.... are there any invasive species that we might consider good for something?

What kinds of Introduced plants work well a part of our systems that have become an essential part of our modern landscape???

  • At the lower edge of forest, kukui has become more or less integrated, so that even Joseph Rock considered it an indigenous species. One has to wonder what used to grow where kukui grows now, perhaps it was just tall `ohi`a and lama, and other natives of the lower elevation forest.

Some would argue that Strawberry guava provides wood (I even have a lomi stick and kala'au of strawberry guava) but I would much rather have a lomi stick of `ohi`a and kala'au of other native hardwoods rather than see strawberry guava become more dominant.

    • Mahalo Ohu

      Agreed

It really dominates the water rich areas, what might have liked these conditions

and Hau, that guy grows pretty aggresively to...

      as an aside:

I have found that there was a time where Mango was planted to mark important sites or land areas, though not agressive its still not a native, but seems to be very desirable by many.

If given the chance to reforest an area, with natives I am curious as to the structure of the forest.  I understand there is a canopy, understory, shrubs and low lying plants, ground cover and vines.

Its finding the balance of what natives would get along and if any what non-native species can be integrated.

Seems like strawberry guava is quick to dominate the landscape, so like you say maybe not a good choice and from what Ive seen, people have been irradicating them... so what can fill that void then...

Im sure there are lots of options, just nice to stimulate the mind and see what manao comes forth

this is a fun venue to talk story.
