Why am I not comfortable with this BILL?
In my opinion it is manipulative:
" the State should remind itself and the people of Hawaii of the steps taken toward the fulfillment of Queen Lili‘uokalani's vision of peaceful reconciliation, and of the need for ongoing work to realize such a vision; "
What has the State have to do with reconciliation or it's fingers in our human right to "self determination"? NOTHING!
I see the kaona............the steps taken by OHA/State of Hawaii........steps taken amongst themselves without going into the communities for our free and prior consent to allow them to maha'oi in our self determination.
They can keep they're HO'OKU'IKAHI day which they going find some touristy money making celebration for..........
I am in SHOCK that the State of Hawaii going celebrate Queen Liliuokalani giving up the Kingdom of Hawaii in a "PEACEFUL " manner;
I guess that's what they want us to do so too, by signing OHA/KANAIOLOWALU/STATE of HAWAII.......Hawaiian Roll.

RECOGNIZING JANUARY 17 OF EVERY YEAR AS HO‘OKU‘IKAHI DAY, OR RECONCILIATION DAY, IN HONOR AND REMEMBRANCE OF THE JUSTICE, RECONCILIATION, AND NONVIOLENCE OF QUEEN LILI‘UOKALANI.
WHEREAS, on January 17, 1993, the people of Hawaii commemorated the 100th anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom; and
WHEREAS, the United Church of Christ officially and publicly apologized to Na Kanaka Maoli at Iolani Palace and Kaumakapili Church on January 17, 1993; and
WHEREAS, in 1993, United States President Bill Clinton signed into law Public Law 103-150, as an apology to Native Hawaiians; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Ecumenical Coalition and the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center have commemorated January 17 as Ho‘oku‘ikahi Day every year since 1993, in partnership and collaboration with historic churches such as Kawaiahao Church, Central Union Church, St. Andrew's Cathedral, Kaumakapili Church, St. Augustine's Church, and community groups and organizations including the Interfaith Alliance of Hawaii, the Forgiveness Project, and Office of Hawaiian Affairs; and
WHEREAS, lasting reconciliation requires an ongoing and continuous commitment by all parties to recognize past and ongoing harms; accept responsibility as appropriate for wrongdoing; reconstruct relationships, institutions, and systems of power distribution; and determine appropriate reparatory justice measures in a peaceful, transparent, and open manner; and
WHEREAS, Queen Lili‘uokalani, through various forms of nonviolent and peaceful resistance, continuously sought to achieve peaceful reconciliation for the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom through the restoration of her country and the return of its lands and sovereignty; and
WHEREAS, the State should remind itself and the people of Hawaii of the steps taken toward the fulfillment of Queen Lili‘uokalani's vision of peaceful reconciliation, and of the need for ongoing work to realize such a vision; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, the House of Representatives concurring, that January 17 of every year be recognized as Ho‘oku‘ikahi Day, or Reconciliation Day, in honor and remembrance of the justice, reconciliation, and nonviolence of Queen Lili‘uokalani; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor.

Although they are talking about the statue they have made many statements about our political status that can be used in our work of gathering up our people and putting our government into action….these kinds of statements should motivate those who are not sure to become sure, to move the fence walkers off the fence and into action they should fan the fires of all kanaka and cause us to motivate…
The memorial statue of Queen Liliuokalani, located on the grounds of the state capitol and maintained by the department of accounting and general services, is a symbol and a tribute to the Hawaiian Kingdom. The legislature further finds that the inscription on the memorial should be befitting of the honor and greatness of Queen Liliuokalani.
The purpose of this Act is to honor the dignity and memory of Queen Liliuokalani as the reigning Queen of the Hawaiian Kingdom until her death

These next paragraphs are very important because they tell us the state knows exactly what our condition and political status is.
They are saying we have never given up our sovereignty and that because the United Nations Declaration was signed our rights as an indigenous people to self-determination are being acknowledged.
How's the second paragraph which say the Queen was Queen even when she died….
And yes these are all things many of us have known and have been saying…but now they are saying it…
Do we understand the significance of that?
The legislature finds that Hawaiian sovereignty remains unrelinquished today. In December 2010, the United States endorsed the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which acknowledged, among other things, that "[i]ndigenous peoples have the right to self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development."
Queen Liliuokalani never relinquished the throne in the face of the overthrow, notwithstanding her forced removal from the throne. Therefore, the legislature finds that Hawaiian sovereignty was never relinquished in the overthrow and that Queen Liliuokalani remained the Queen of the Kingdom of Hawaii until her death.

Josephine Keliipio I have mixed feelings about that battle since the Great King used white weapons to kill other Hawaiians. Very hard for me to celebrate something like that.

Amelia Gora sadly, not everyone knows that Keoua Peeale one of the twin sons of Kalaniopuu was there with his people and Kamehameha ALLOWED them to leave.....Hawaiians have been indoctrinated with the haole version, the missionaries/mercenaries whose goal/assignment was to take over the Hawaiian Islands since their arrival in 1820, shortly after Kamehameha died................Our Oral history differs from the haole history................all in all it's nice to see some kind of unity continuing though.............btw Keoua Peeale and family fled to Kauai. His twin brother Keoua Ahuula died on the Big Island...their step brother Kiwalao was the father of Keopuolani who was the mother of Liholiho/Kamehameha II, Nahienaena (w), and Kauikeaouli/Kamehameha III, ......if you look at the whole thing ....it was a family conflict....the Kalaniopuu sons opposing their stepfather....... This morning (4:30-7:00) Was the 219 anniversary of the nuʻuanu battle, witch was the last battle to end in Kamehameha in being the king and ruler of hawaii. The day we became known as hawaiians! Mahalo to all the people that put on this great event, i cant wait for next year. And mahalo to all that gave their lives for this great Nation of hawaii, and for giving us the right as hawaiians to assemble as a Nation! We gathered to Commemorate and honor you this morning!
