Approximately 300 years ago when the age of Imperialism was at its peak, European explorers discovered the Islands of Hawaii bring with them gifts of raw material, deadly diseases, and a lust for land. Over the course of 200 years, European and American settlers quickly began to alter the traditional Hawaiian way of life and eventually changed the system of land use and governing. The humble, indigenous people of Hawaii were taken advantage of and lied too resulting with a death of a nation. Hawaii under the order of the Republic of Hawaii, was illegally overthrown by America. Along with the annexation, the lands of the Hawaiian Kingdom were yielded (ceded) over to the United States government. In hopes that these lands would be returned, Queen Lili'uokalani trusted that once the United States looked at their act of threatened violence and seizure, the government would undo their actions.

I have yet to finish writing anymore for this paper, but how does this sound as an introduction to how land use in hawaii has gone from natural to conventional (man-made)?

  • What is your contention?

    Discovery?

    fedual and British monarchial?

Or, expanisionism for military protection of the west from the east?

    Westward for economic wants?

Depending on where one stand: Friendly nation, occupation, discovery, expansionism, law of reason, economic gain and wants, I suggest one choose one.  My choice would be occupation, but one would have to decided how much of a degree is first people (300) in a white mans world and their rule of law.

If it's discovery 1778 European common law

If it's friendly, no war or battle..

If it's war, the battle of Kuamo'o was fought with white man's guns or the battle Nuuanu had guns, I believe.

The expansionism to protect private property and citizens, thus, military.

Again, your paper would be stronger if you choose one, I believe Keanu Sai is arguing occupation.  One might want to go their and than trample across the lawn with what you posted as ones intro.  My concern is the traditional would lead you astray into the naked savage coming from a white man's perspective.

Caution, native tenent or occupancy is a difficult and at times inhumane, often times it's at the other end of a point of a gun.  I have all types of land private to state to Kuleana to land stealing in my ohana, to preservation. I pay taxes for all of them to the fake state.

But, in the end the argument lies with occupancy.

The Keanu Sai case will probable make your essay inconclusive because Keanu have not yet processed his arguments against all odds with the citizens.

Thanks for participating in student search.  Good Luck!

  • Aloha Iulai,

Language and the choice of words tells the story of where you are coming from. It gives you away and also myself.  So I do not write to criticize you, but to show my thoughts on how to find out the Hawaiian to story, to speak what is legit.

European explorers discovered the Islands of Hawaii

The choice of "Discover" is something at the heart of the Hawaiian experience.   Nicolas V in the 1400's penned the "Doctrine of discovery"  this Papel Bull or order allowed Europeans to seize lands and people of non Christian origins to serve as slaves.

So we do not view the Hawaiian islands as discovered by the Europeans, Their visit brought mixed results to Hawaii, but the catastrophic introduction of disease which transformed a 2 million population down to 35,000 in 1890, was the most horrible reality.

European and American settlers quickly began to alter the traditional Hawaiian way of life and eventually changed the system of land use and governing

The change of land use happened in most part after the occupation begun in 1893, The laws of the Kingdom expressed by the Mahele reflected traditional understandings  going back to the beginning of time.

The humble, indigenous people of Hawaii

The word "Indigenous" also comes from a Latin tradition meaning the poor people.  To describe people as indigenous is to say the original people on top the land, but the meaning is without rights.  Hawaiians are the original people on top the land and the owners and holder of current land title, known as Royal Patent grants.

    a death of a nation

Uncle Pomai has told you that is where we both live today.

Hawaii under the order of the Republic of Hawaii, was illegally overthrown by America

Many people say "Overthrown" but in a legal sense that agrees with its loss to us.  Occupation is how I view our relationship with America, since I can not find any legal basis for foreign claims to our nation.

I hope this does not make it more confusing. The Kingdom exists and Hawaiians have the rights given by KeAkua.  You cannot begin to understand this history until you have read the Declaration of rights 1839.  That is what applied in 1839 and 1893 and 2010.

  • ALOHA Kaua, e Iulai,

The Hawaiian Kingdom as a nation is not DEAD.   All what you are saying is what have been told of the history of Hawaii.   New research now finds that they was no Annexation, no Ceded of lands and no Overthrow.   Annexation, Ceded Lands and Overthrow is what United States have been wanting everyone to accept as the Truth.

The Truth is that on January 16, 1893 thru an "Act of War" United States invaded and has since Occupied the Hawaiian Kingdom nation.  United States have never removed its military forces from its Occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom nation.

On December 6 at Iolani Palace the military forces of the United States were there reminding all of us, that Hawaii is under their Occupation.

What ever your write on the history of the Occupation of Hawaii, let it be Pono.   Not a repeat of the past lies.   Let the Truth be told.
