I am here at the UNPFII for the Koani foundation representing the Hawaiian Kingdom interests at the forum. The Hawaiian caucus is diverse in its goals and agendas. Some of our members are Sovereign Kanaka and some believe the Akaka Bill and Federal recognition is the best outcome for Kanaka Maoli. What do you think is the best way to represent Kanaka interests here. The areas of discussion are Climate Change, Health, de-colonization and Land Tenure.

  • I'm curious, by what authority has the Koani Foundation been invested as a representative of the "Kingdom of Hawaii"? perhaps it should be made clear that the Koani Foundation is a representative of "the indigenous peoples of Hawaii nei" not the Kingdom.

To speak as a representative of the Crown would require the approval of Ka Mo'i Ali'i. Has the Koani Foundation actually received the approval of the highest ranking Ali'i in Hawaii nei to represent the "Kingdom". Would an appointed representative of the "Kingdom" truly sign away our autonomy as a people to haole interlopers and say it is best for the Kanaka. The Republic and Territory of Hawaii was born from greed and usurpation, spawned by covetous racist missionaries abetted by the US Military.

The State of Hawaii is built on a foundation of lies, deceit, and corruption. It is beyond my comprehension that any representative of the Kingdom of Hawaii would believe that continued US occupation is in the best interest of the Kanaka Maoli. Look to our Brothers on the mainland, after being systematically murdered and robbed they are still struggling to find dignity on their reservations. We must stand for what is pono not for what we might scrape up from the bottom of a smelly puka.
    • Aloha mai Kimo,

Koani foundation is not directly a representative of the Hawaiian kingdom. Koani position can be found on their website and I am responsible for these actions. I have been sponsored by them to attend the forum. I am a representative of Aupuni Hawaii and act with a royal patent grant from the Mo'i Norman Keanaaina. I do this Pro-Tempore and work to make the conditions to have a legal democratic election to restore full leadership.

We have not signed anything away and do not cede authority to the UN or the American occupiers. We do NOT believe that continued US occupation is in our interests and I am unclear where you come to this conclusion. We were concerned that the interest of Hawaiian Nationals were not represented in this forum and seek to make know our position there. Perhaps ignoring the UNPFII is a better way to remove any of their credibility, but I have found most delegates side with us and desire to join us.

these dialogues have been more than constructive, real action [not part of the UN] looks possible and a growing movement of people in the same oppression can come together to change our status.

There are other representatives, not from Koani, who support the Akaka bill and we seek from this forum input on how you wish to be represented.

Those brothers on the mainland look to us to imua. So being here was important.

  • I am happy to report that we ho'oponopono and the small kine additions we requested have been returned to the intervention.
We still need to dialogue on what Hawaiian Kingdom people would like to see done at the UNPFII and what kind of future representation you would like.

there are differences here on the nature of Hawaiian future political status, Akaka or Kingdom or ?

  • This is the email I sent out after receiving the final draft on Land tenure which had any input from us removed.

    Aloha Lilikala e ka kou,

I am saddened to see that the final draft excluded any of the interests related to Hawaiian independence. I realize that this a group process but it does a disservice to a large number of Kanaka Maoli who should also have a say at the UNPFII. Indigenous land tenure interests in the pacific are of great concern to the Hawaiian Kingdom and our people would like to particapate in this process.

Since we oppose the Akaka bill and the "Ceding" of our lands to the Americans it seems natural that this forum should include some statement from us. Perhaps in the future we can some say in the process in which the Hawaiian caucus decides on what position it takes.

The Hawaiian caucus position as it stands does not fully reflect our views on land tenure and we are willing in the future to work with the Hawaiian caucus to clarify this problem

  • Aloha Kai,

Who is "representing" Who at this Forum? I sure hope there isn't any Akaka Bill Advocates. It would seem the 'selling out" is now stretching beyond the shores of the Amelikas`

I second Lana's feelings. Of all the people that go to these gatherings, aside from the Koani Foundation, they represent interest of various agendas from different segments in this spectrum of the so-called Hawaiian Community...and they're mostly "Americans" first.

This "Indigenous" title has the same affect on my skin like being raked over an A`a field....auwee!!! We are (present-tense) NOT "TRIBAL"

I for one don't want someone who is advocating for the Akaka Bill to be spinning stories that the rest of us Hawaiians back here are/would support deals and ideas being drafted and circulated there to foreigners that have no clue what we really are/want.

Please if you can...share more details.

    • Aloha ka kou,

I am here representing Kanaka Maoli National interests. I am reviewing the work of the Hawaii and Pacific caucus to see that the National interests are respected. I have found it hard to put HK positions forward such as Royal Patent rights. We seem to disagree whether some sort of pre-Cook idea of indigenous communal ownership should be encouraged as a standard for Hawaiian land tenure instead of restoring the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Some of the leadership supports outright the Akaka bill and Federal recognition. I personally have not found very much support for this position outside the university people. Perhaps this is an exercise in futility but we can let the world know here what we want. We need more feedback on what Kanaka want to say and who represents them in the world.

the opportunity I have found is connecting with other nations facing similar status and look forward to creating coalitions with them. This has created real excitement here, because not much faith that the UNPFII will do anything from they rights.
  • The AKAKA BILL is hewa! The Apology Bill may have acknowledged the overthrow the Hawaiian monarchy, but it doesn't mean we as the Hawaiian people will have the stolen lands back. The question pertains to the Legal Title Passage whereas the lands were TMK as the U.S. had done back in the early 1930's or so. There was no legal transference of lands from the fake Republic of Hawaii to the U.S> Bogus as hell!

Land tenure should be part of Hawaiian Kingdom and no settler can purchase any lands! The po'e are the care takers!
  • Hi Kai.

I do not trust the UN one bit. The U.S. became a member on October 24, 1945. To date they haven't done much for Hawaiians. We still do not have basic human rights. Look at the homes in Keaukaha as an example. Look at how many Hawaiians are still homeless. It's fallen on deaf ears for the last 64 years and IMHO the U.S. is wholly to blame. They control the UN.

    It's what... the eighth session

    http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/unpfii/en/session_eighth.html

and it's the same old same old.
  • ALOHA Kaua, e Kai, The AKaKa BILL is HEWA. There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that allows the Congress to recognize Native Hawaiians as Native Americans. The AKaKa BILL is just as HEWA as the Invasion and Occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom by the United States on January 16, 1893. The Human Rights of Queen Liliuokalani and our people and their decendants like me as a Hawaiian National are continuously being violated by the United States. Keep in mind that the United States did not support the UN Delcaration of the Rights of the Indigenous Peoples. United States needs to pull down their flag and Go Home. Get out of my country, the Hawaiian Kingdom. HE HAWAII AU, o Pomai
  • I'm glad you posted b/c I was going to post about that forum after seeing the latest vid. from Koani foundation. My question thought, does this forum, making others aware helpful as far as obtaining what we want? I only ask that because I understand the focus on kanaka maoli rather than on Hawaii as a nation. I mean, is this an alternative to make people aware and educate them first rather than just talk about what the US has done and continue to do so?
