Hawai'i In Vogue At White House !

Obama Hosts Luau For Congress June 25, 2009 President Obama is bringing a part of Hawaii — where he spent some years growing up — to the White House. The annual Congressional picnic Thursday night on the South Lawn of the White House features a pig roast and poi, a traditional Polynesian dish made from Taro, as well as tiki torches and potted palm trees, for ambiance. There will also be a bit of a carnival atmosphere, since the White House set up a dunk tank to allow members of Congress to soak their favorite, or least favorite, Obama aides. Chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, congressional liaison Phil Schiliro, spokesman Robert Gibbs and budget director Peter Orzag are among the senior aides who have volunteered to get wet. “My only concern at this point is that the water gets a little warmer maybe, before we start throwing,” Gibbs said. Aloha.

  • Him being president violates International Law as well as their own constitution. Like many other laws, they just turn a blind eye and enforce only the ones they want or that benefit them.
    • Aloha Keliiaumoana,
As a matter of law, you're absolutely correct. The question now is how to rectify this injustice within the legacy of Her Majesty, Queen Liliu'okalani.
Save the United States - Free Hawai'i !

  • NO OFFENSE but that "feast" is disgustingly arrogant and insensitive. Meanwhile hundreds of Hawaiians live on beaches without adequate food and shelter. Some cannot even afford to buy HAWAIIAN FOOD UGH. They are treated worse than dirt. They do not even get the basics like how immigrants do as in housing and FOOD coupled with free medical. Eat up! While many Hawaiians starve. Boast about Obama celebrating Hawaiian food while turning his back on the Hawaiian PEOPLE. Disgusting.

    Aloha, Lana
    • Aloha Lana,
Your manao is understandable. But at least the White House is reminding the US Congress of Hawai'i. Things are happening regarding Hawaiian issues. Having the President of the United (sic) States celebrating his connection to Hawai'i Nei is a positive development.
      Malama pono,

      • NO OFFENSE but to me it's not positive to celebrate the food -- stuffing one's face while in the midst of a major land recon/takeover via the Akaka Bill. They're not celebrating US as people or celebrating our history or nation.

I don't know why some people are happy that he is celebrating his "connection" to Hawai'i when he has done sh*t for Hawaiians. Now if we are discussing people like Duke Aiona and Todd Apo then I would cut them some slack since both of them have stood in defense of Hawaiians in SOME way. NO OFFENSE to his supporters but Obama has done sh*t for Hawaiians. He is NOT a NATIVE SON. Native Sons are people like Bumpy Kanahele, Ikaika Hussey, and many others who do not have White Privilege e.g. born in wealth) that Obama has. Stuffing his face while many Hawaiians cannot even AFFORD to buy and eat poi and/or can afford the basics as in a HOME is damn disrespectful.

        Aloha, Lana
